It is a requirement of the Irish Nursing Board that teachers (lecturers/professors) of nursing at undergraduate & postgraduate
level must hold a minimum of a Masters degree and must also complete a postgraduate program for Teacher Training (PhD
prepared nurses must also complete this program). The Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Health Science Education
(Nursing/Midwifery) is a joint venture between the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the School of Education in Trinity
College Dublin. The course is intended to facilitate health service professionals to develop their skills in teaching, assessment,
curriculum design, development and evaluation. It is a one year full time postgraduate program designed for Master’s prepared
nurse/midwives to teach nursing and midwifery at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The course comprises of five modules:
the theory and practice of health sciences education (nursing/midwifery), facilitating nurse/midwifery learning in a practice
settings; the psychology of education; curriculum issues in nursing/midwifery education and quality improvement in education.
2
Within Ireland, to teach nursing/midwifery students at undergraduate/post graduate level, teachers must be a nurse/ midwife
who holds a Master’s degree (or equivalent), in nursing or midwifery, and have successfully complete a recognized Post graduate
teacher training program. Nurse/Midwife teachers must be registered (licensed) with An Bord Altranais (the Irish Nursing
Board) – and remain on their Nurse Teacher Registration (RNT). This is something which is not required of our academic
colleagues who lecture within the University setting in other disciplines. As a profession we value this opportunity for further
development, it is welcomed by the university and is now seen as a benchmark for other disciplines to follow.

In the 1990’s in the U.K and Ireland there were no Masters Programs which offered nurse/midwifery focused higher degrees.
The MA in Women’s Studies allowed for the flexibility to study nursing/midwifery related issues at a master’s level. All
assignments/assessments had a nurse/midwifery focus. A 20,000 word research dissertation on a midwifery focused issue was
completed in part fulfillment for this degree.

4
This program was conducted with a cohort of nurses. All assessments within the program had a nursing focus.
5
A Midwifery qualification can only be gained post registration (licensure) as a Registered General Nurse (RGN = RN). The
student midwife undertakes a further 18 months post graduate program to gain registration (licensure) as a Registered Midwife
(RM). This qualification would equate to that of a CNM in the USA.
In Ireland and the UK we do not have a generic trained nurse. Nurses must train within a specific discipline of nursing – Adult
nursing (RGN), Pediatric nursing (RSCN), Psychiatric nursing (RMN) and Intellectual Disabilities (RMHN).
6
The title nurse teacher/midwife teacher is a permanent post (tenured) and equates to a university lecturer (Ireland & UK) –
Assistant Professor (USA).

The role of External Examiner is a requirement of the Irish and English Nursing Boards and all universities in the UK and
Ireland. Within nursing & midwifery the person holding this position must be appointed by the relevant university and must also
be approved by the Nursing Board, as it is their mechanism for ensuring an independent assessment of the education and
professional standards of nursing and midwifery programs. The External Examiner is employed by the hosting university and
has a joint responsibly to the university and the Nursing Board to audit and monitor the educational programs and nursing &
midwifery standards within the specific university. The External Examiner has responsibility and ultimate sanction in the grades
awarded at undergraduate and postgraduate levels of nursing & midwifery programs. This is a competitive position which
requires an extensive and visionary perspective. It is greatly valued by the profession and is a requirement across all departments
within the university setting within Ireland and the UK. An annual report must be submitted to the board of the relevant
University, and the relevant School of Nursing and Midwifery.
