SECTION 1: JOB DESCRIPTION – GENERAL DETAILS Title Specialty Doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit Location South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust The James Cook University Hospital To provide a wide range of specialist treatments for patients Overall job purpose requiring emergency and elective surgery. Duties will include outpatient clinics, day case operating lists, and assessment of emergencies and ward referrals during working hours. Accountable to Mr Richard Langford, Clinical Director Reports to Mr Richard Langford, Clinical Director Works with: 6 Consultants, Specialty Doctors, and 7 Dental Core Trainees, and the wider body of colleagues at South Tees NHS Foundation Trust. One of Europe’s most modern hospitals, The James Cook University site is the largest of its type and has a wide range of specialities. This hospital was opened in October 2003 and has a capacity of 1,007 beds. Based on the original site of South Cleveland Hospital, all acute and elective medical and surgical specialties are accommodated. Tertiary services, in addition to cardiology and cardiac surgery, include renal medicine/haemodialysis, neurosurgery, vascular surgery and the regional spinal injuries unit. This site contains a modern central operating suite containing 20 well-equipped theatres, with two recovery areas. This is immediately adjacent to an Adult Surgical Day Unit containing a further three theatres and also to the Paediatric Day Unit. The 16 bedded general ICU is across the corridor. Two additional theatres for gynaecology and obstetrics are in the Central Delivery Suite and two more in the Ophthalmology Day Unit. The Accident and Emergency Department on this site is the designated Regional Trauma Centre for Teesside, South Durham and North Yorkshire. The hospital has a 24-hour Acute Admissions Unit. As an accredited major trauma receiving hospital, it contributes to UK Trauma, Audit & Research Network (UK TARN). It occupies a leading UK position in its survival rates from blunt trauma as evidenced from UK TARN. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery This is a large and very active department providing a complete range of Oral and Maxillofacial services across Teesside, South Durham and North Yorkshire with a catchment population approaching 1.2 million people. In particular there is provision of head and neck cancer surgery including microvascular and robotic surgery, orthognathic surgery and other aspects of major Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The Middlesbrough oral and maxillofacial service also provides the major sub regional trauma service based in the Major Trauma Centre dealing with several hundred facial injuries a year. There is an established Academic Centre embracing postgraduate medical education, Nurse Training School, the School of Radiography and library facilities. It encompasses two large lecture theatres with the latest audio-visual aids and a considerable number of classrooms and seminar rooms, including ward facilities for teaching and examining. There is a new library with comprehensive IT suite. A dedicated undergraduate teaching centre has been commissioned recently and there are plans to have a dedicated simulation-training centre on site in the near future. The purpose built Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry at the James Cook University Hospital has recently been refurbished. Good computer facilities with an excellent Medical Illustration and Radiology department with conebeam CT all digital. At the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton there are two single surgeries recently refurbished. Medical Illustration and Radiology are available on site with excellent dental nursing support. There is a large shared departmental junior staff office/ seminar room, nursing offices and a staff tea room. Laboratory services are provided on site at Middlesbrough by a team of six, including two Maxillofacial Prosthetists, two Orthodontic Technicians and two Laboratory Assistants. They provide a comprehensive orthodontic, oral maxillofacial surgery and restorative laboratory service. The area The North East itself is a wide and diverse region covering vast rural locations such as the North Yorkshire Moors National Park as well as urban areas such as Middlesbrough itself. This brings real complexity in terms of the service provision required by the trust. The region is home to a wide variety of towns and many picturesque villages within the stunning coastlines of North Yorkshire and Teesside. We have excellent travel links with easy access to London/Edinburgh by train (only a couple of hours away) and we even have our own local train station on site at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. This is an area brimming with history and striking scenery. Teesside is well known for its diverse mix of industry, its rich culture and dramatic countryside. SECTION 2: PERSON SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Qualifications ESSENTIAL BDS or equivalent primary dental qualification DESIRABLE On GDC Specialist list for Oral Surgery Current registration with the UK General Dental Council Full registration UK General Dental Council FDSRCS or MFDS or equivalent Relevant Experience Three years full-time postgraduate training (or its Experience working in the NHS and in equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) hospital dentistry since first obtaining registration Advanced trauma management and other Minimum 2 years’ experience as a resident SHO in appropriate surgical skills Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery including in-patient experience Capable of running ward rounds and making in-patient management decisions Experience in dento-alveolar surgery and basic trauma management Experience in sedation techniques Teaching Experience of teaching/training undergraduate and postgraduate students Organisation of teaching/training events Good presentation skills Audit Evidence of involvement in clinical audit Organised audit that has resulted in change An understanding of clinical governance SECTION 3: DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST Maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Clinical/ on-call responsibilities Undertake any responsibility which relates to oral and maxillofacial surgery, both elective and emergency. Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences. Active involvement in audit. Continuing professional development. Any other duties which may be required. Travel and attendance at peripheral units Friarage Hospital / North Tees General Hospital. Job Plan The registrar will form part of a 1 in 7 rota for on call and emergency work. The registrar will work for one of the consultant teams but will be expected to cross cover activities within the department. Hospital Infection Control (HIC) The staff member will ensure that (s) he follows the Trust’s hospital infection prevention and control (HIC) policies and procedures to protect patients, staff and visitors from healthcare-associated infections. He or she will ensure that (s)he performs the correct hand hygiene procedures (as described in HIC 14), when carrying out clinical duties. He or she will use aseptic technique and personal protective equipment in accordance with Trust policies. .
