Pass Grading criteria:-To achieve a pass grade the evidence must
show that the learner is able to:
P1 calculate the magnitude, direction and position of the line of action of
the resultant and equilibrant of a non-concurrent coplanar force system
containing a minimum of four forces acting in different directions
Feedback:-
P2 calculate the support reactions of a simply supported beam carrying
at least two concentrated loads and a uniformly distributed load
Feedback:-
P3 calculate the induced direct stress, strain and dimensional change in
a component subjected to direct uni-axial loading and the shear stress
and strain in a component subjected to shear loading
Feedback:-
M1 calculate the factor of safety in operation for a component subjected
to combined direct and shear loading against given failure criteria
Feedback:-
N.B. To obtain a merit, a pass must first be achieved, likewise, to obtain a
distinction, a merit must be achieved. The assignments will be contributory
to your grading, but will not provide full opportunity to be graded individually.

Assignment # 1
This assignment consists of questions covering the following criteria: - P1,
P2, P3, M1
It is essential that you express yourself clearly and concisely both in a
communication and a mathematical sense.
Question 1 (Criterion P1)
Refer to the force system on the plate shown in Figure Q1. State the ‘type’ of system.
(i)
Graphically determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant.
(ii)
Using an analytical method confirm your answer to part (i) and also determine
the perpendicular distance of the resultant from point A.
Question 2 (Criterion P2)
The beam shown in Figure Q2 has a UDL of 380kN/m. Calculate the reactions at the
simple supports.

Question 3 (Criterion P3)
(A)
A 2.6m long steel towing bar of solid circular section diameter 45mm is expected
to carry a maximum load of 270 kN. The factor of safety is 4; and for the steel
the UTS is 540 MNm-2 and the Modulus of Elasticity is 200 GNm-2.
(i)
Calculate the actual towing capacity of the bar and state whether the proposed
limit is acceptable.
(ii)
Determine the extension of the bar under the maximum proposed load.
(B)
The structural member shown in Figure Q3 is joined by a single 10mm diameter
rivet.
(i)
For the 45kN tensile load applied as shown determine the shear stress in the
rivet
Question 4 (Criterion M1)
For the rivet in Question 3 B:
(i)
Using a value of 320 MNm-2 for the UTS of the rivet material, calculate the Factor
of Safety at the load shown.
(iii)
It is recommended for this application and under this tensile load that the Factor
of Safety applied should be 4. Comment on this with possible suggestions based
on the value of the Factor of Safety found in part (i). You should base your
suggestions on scientific principles and on practical considerations.
