Study Guide for Quiz on Solar System – Part 1
Quiz on Wednesday, January 11, 2017
The following can be used on the open notes part.
Your notes on planets and moons and table of comparisons of inner and outer planets (Will be collected
with quiz)
“Comets Notes” with Asteroids, Meteoroids, Meteors, Meteorites notes
“Astronomers Notes – Chapter 3 Section 1: Observing the Solar System”
You may not use this study guide, “Creating Notes on Planet Characteristics and Comparisons”
either “Part 1 – Inner Planets” or “Continued”, the video notes, or my tables of inner and outer
planets during the quiz. You should study these plus sections 1, 3, 4, and 5 from Chapter 3 and pages
56-57 from Chapter 2 and prepare your notes.
The quiz will be in two parts:
Closed Notes:
• The names of the inner planets and outer planets and their order in distance from the Sun.
• Characteristics of inner planets as a group, outer planets as a group, and all planets. Study your table
and the examples from “Creating Notes on Planet Characteristics and Comparisons”. Some will also
be on open notes part.
Open Notes
• Characteristics of individual planets.
• Characteristics of some major moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan, Enceladus, Triton).
• Characteristics of inner planets as a group, outer planets as a group, and all planets. Some is also in
the closed notes part.
• Definitions of and differences between comets, meteoroids, meteors, meteorites, and asteroids.
• The parts of a comet and how the coma and tail are produced
• The relative lengths (longer/shorter/none) and direction (away from sun) of the tail at different points
in a comet’s orbit and why.
• Comets originate from either the Kuiper belt or the Oort cloud
• Contributions of astronomers to our understanding of the Solar System
•
Practice Quiz
I. Closed notes: List from memory the four inner planets in order from closest to the Sun to farthest from Sun.
Do the same for the four outer planets.
II. For individual planets and moons, treat the clues on “Creating Notes on Planet Characteristics and
Comparisons” either “Part 1 – Inner Planets” or “Continued” as the practice quiz. These will all be open notes.
III. Comparisons. For each statement below identify whether it best describes inner planets (IP), outer planets
(OP) or all planets (ALL). Write the abbreviations. Do this without notes. Some of these will be in the closed
