THE NMSU WRITING
CENTER
an orientation
What does the Writing Center do?
The Writing Center
 helps
students, staff, and faculty from across the
university community produce effective writing for any
number of situations;
 helps at any stage of the writing process, from
understanding an assignment to developing ideas to
polishing a revised draft; and
 costs nothing!
When is the Writing Center open?

The Writing Center, located in Clara Belle
Williams Hall in room 102, will be open for
appointments:
 Monday
 Friday,
– Thursday, from 9am until 6pm
from 9am until noon
How do I make an appointment?

We use an online scheduling system called
WCOnline. You can access it at:

It looks like this:
*The first time you log in every semester, you will be asked to create an
account. Don’t worry! It’s easy!
What should I bring to my
appointment?





A printed copy of the paper you want help with
Your assignment sheet if you have it
A grading rubric for your writing task
A pen or pencil
A willingness to learn
What will happen when I arrive?




You will be greeted by one of our qualified
consultants, all of whom are graduate students and
instructors in the English department.
Your consultant will introduce herself and ask you to
fill out some brief paperwork.
You and your consultant will talk about the kind of
help you want and the best way to get that help.
And then you’ll get to work!
Will you edit and proofread my
paper?

No. But we will work with you to identify patterns
in grammatical or punctuation errors, so that you
can more effectively edit and proofread the essay
you brought in and any essay you write in the
future.
Do you offer online consultations?


Yes. We offer online consultations through NMSU
email. However, due to high demand, our
consultants will require 3 to 4 business days to
return your paper with comments. Therefore, if
you’re to use this service, you need to have a paper
ready well in advance of its due date.
You can find more information about The Online
Writing Center here:
