Grudge Ball Review
• Each team starts with 10 X’s on the board.
• Teams will take turns answering questions. Your team has one minute to
answer a question. Teams not answering need to pay attention! You can
steal the question if the original team does not get the correct answer.
• If your team gets the answer right, you can erase 2 X’s from the board (you
can’t erase your own).
• If you get the answer right, you may shoot from the line for an opportunity
to erase 2 extra X’s (4 total).
• The goal is to knock out the other teams.
• If your team is knocked out, you can earn back 2 X’s by getting the question
right (double for making a basket-4X’s)
Helpful Hint- You SHOULD take notes for
questions that you are unsure of or get wrong
What is behavior?
Behavior is the way an organism reacts to
stimuli in its environment
A decrease in response to a stimulus that
neither rewards nor harms an animal is
called?
Habituation
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
Which of the following is not an innate
behavior?
A. A dog looking for its food dish
B. A baby mammal sucking milk
C. A worm moving away from bright light
D. A spider spinning a web
A
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
What are the characteristics of an
animal?
Animals are multicellular, heterotrophic,
eukaryotic organisms whose cells lack
cell walls.
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
What type of wastes are removed from
the body via the excretory system and
respiratory system, respectively?
Ammonia and carbon dioxide
In fishes, pharyngeal pouches may
develop into…
Gills
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
Do innate behaviors significantly change
over time? Explain.
No, innate behaviors are not learned
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
What are the 4 characteristics that
chordates share during at least one stage
of development?
A dorsal, hollow nerve cord; notochord;
a tails that extends beyond the anus,
and pharyngeal pouches
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
Give an example of insight learning
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
Animals cells are ______________ cells
that lack _______ _______
Animal cells are eukaryotic cells that lack cell walls
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
What is imprinting? Is this behavior
restricted to birds?
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
What is circadian rhythm?
Circadian rhythm is a behavioral cycle that occurs daily
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
Suppose you find a stray cat. As you
approach, the cat begins to hiss, arch its
back, and flatten its ears. Which type of
behavior is this cat exhibiting? How
would this behavior help this cat survive?
This behavior is aggression. Aggression can be
beneficial to survival by exerting dominancy
and defending territory.
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
Coyotes are predators. Prairie dogs are prey.
Prairie dogs live in large colonies. When a coyote
nears, one prairie dog may spot the predator
and make a high-pitched sound that alerts other
members of the colony. In the process of making
the sound, the alarm-calling prairie dog draws
the coyote’s attention, so that animal faces the
greatest risk of predation. How does the theory
of kin selection explain this behavior?
The theory of kin selection explains this behavior because helping relatives survive
increases an individual’s fitness because the individual has similar genes as the kin. The
on prairie dog may have called attention to itself; however, the other relatives (with
similar genes) will likely be able to escape because of the warning.
Alone, our vision is limited. Together
we're 20/20.
In Pavlov’s experiment, a dog produced
salivation in reaction to a bell associated
with food. Which type of learning does
this describe? Explain your answer.
This type of learning is classical
conditioning because the stimulus (bell)
begins to produce a certain response
(salivation) due to the association with
food
What is an invertebrate?
An animal without a backbone or vertebral column
Are invertebrates rare? Explain your
answer.
No, more the 95% of the animal kingdom are
informally invertebrates
Why do invertebrates not form a clade (a
group of organism that are believed to
have evolved from a common ancestor)?
Invertebrates do not from a clade
because this category lumps together
organisms that lack a characteristic,
rather than those that share a
characteristic.
What system gathers information
through receptors for sound, light,
chemicals, and other stimuli?
The nervous system
Which activity is required for survival of the species but
not survival of the
organism?
A. digestion
B. excretion
C. reproduction
D. circulation
C
Suppose you were studying the cell walls
of a multicellular organism under a
microscope. Were you studying an
animal? Explain your answer.
No, animals do not have cell walls
Describe the theory of kin selection.
The theory of kin selection states that
helping relatives can improve an
individual’s evolutionary fitness because
related individuals share a large
proportion of genes
A threatening behavior with which an
animal exerts dominance over another
is…
Aggression
Each year, a bird called the American
redstart travels from its winter home in
South America to its nesting area in New
York. This behavior is called…
Migration
A system of communication that uses
meaningful sounds, symbols, or gestures
according to specific rules is called…
Language
Comments
Form a hypothesis. Although the
members of many animal species derive
benefits from living in social groups,
members of other species live alone.
What might be some of the advantages
of solitary (living alone) living?
An advantage of solitary living is less
competition for resources (examplefood and shelter)
Innate behaviors are influenced by
__________.
Genes
What is the function of the notochord
characteristic found in chordate development?
The notochord provides structural support
Bats are nocturnal animals that have a
poor sense of smell. They communicate
through _____________
Sound signals
