Writing Prompt for Final
English 302
As I reflect back on the semester, I realize what great strides you have made and
the potential you all possess. I hope that you have learned something about your
communication. I know I have picked up several things from you and enjoyed the
discussions. Good luck with your future.
Option 1:
In a well-written, professionally developed memo, please take some time to reflect
back on the semester and the growth you have made in this class. Please limit your
reflection to 2 pages and be sure to include appropriate headings, format,
organization, wording, and so forth.
Some things you might think about could include: 1) in terms of communication
skills: where you were when the semester started and where you are now-what are
your strengths. 2) reflect on the activities you did and how they added to your
growth as a communicator. 3) think about how you added to the growth of others in
class. 4) what sort of plan do you have to meet your goals for improvement?
Option 2:
Below is an ethics case dealing with bioethics. Read the case and using the three
questions at the end, formulate a response – no more than two pages. Make sure
your answers are as complete as possible (TS/PS/SS)
DESIGNER BABIES
Most of us know families where all the children are of the same sex, either boys or
girls. In at least some of these cases, the parents often wish for at least one more
child of the other sex. They desire this, not because they do not like or appreciate
the children they already have, but because their hopes and dreams of parenthood
often involve having a child of the other sex. A father may dream of teaching a son
sports or being the father of the bridge, a mother may look forward to sharing in
her daughter’s journey into womanhood or her son’s carrying on of the family name.
Until recently, these desires would remain unfulfilled unless they were lucky. Now
physicians have available a technique called PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic
Diagnosis), which allows physicians to screen embryos for a wide range of possible
diseases as well as for gender. Suitable embryos can then be implanted, while the
future parents may decide not to implant other embryos. These other embryos,
depending on the reasons why they were rejected, may be destroyed or given to
other infertile couples, where they will be implanted in the woman and (hopefully)
brought to term.
Consider the following three questions in regard to PGD:
• What restrictions, if any, should the government impose on the use of PGD? • What restrictions, if any, should physicians and health care organizations impose
of the use of PDG? • What moral considerations should prospective parents consider in regard to their
use of PDG?

Option 3:
Select one discussion that took place in class (for instance the discussion on teams
from Lencioni) that had an impact on you or your thinking. Limiting your response to
no more than two pages, summarize the discussion, explain the significance of the
topic to you, and reflect on the discussion’s impact on you – why it was
significant/important/meaningful.
I enjoyed having you as students this semester. Good luck. If I can help you in any
way in the future, please let me know. You have my email address.
