The Gaian Database: a Dynamic Distributed
Federated Database (DDFD)
CUNY, IBM UK
______________________________________________________________________________
A new type of networked database architecture, the DDFD implements a Store Locally Query Anywhere paradigm, which provides
for global access to data from any vertex in the database network.
Why is a DDFD different?
Fault tolerant and optimised, query routing:
Features:
Key issues addressed:
 Small footprint (~5Mb), minimal admin cost, open source
 Scalability of large distributed databases
 Network establishment using autonomic discovery of
neighbouring nodes; query/data distribution governed by
the dynamic establishment of connections
 Database federation
 Scale-free network topology
 Federation of heterogeneous data sources
 Data semantics
 Semantics added to distributed tables using annotations
on logical tables
