Best Value Statement 2015-16
The accounting officer of St Augustine’s Catholic Academy is responsible and accountable for
ensuring that the Academy delivers good value in the use of public resources. We are aware of
‘A Guide to Academy Value for Money Statements’ published by the Education Funding
Agency and understand that value for money refers to the educational and wider societal
outcomes achieved in return for the taxpayer resources received.
St Augustine’s provides remarkable value for money. We use all available resources to
rigorously promote and sustain a culture of high expectation, rapid progress and outstanding
achievement for all pupils.
We set out below how we have ensured that the academy’s use of its resources have provided
good value for money during the academic year.
What Is Best Value?
Directors will apply the principles of the 'four Cs':
Challenge - Why, how and by whom is a service provided? Do we still need it? Can it be
delivered differently?
What do different stakeholders want?
Compare - How does the school’s performance compare with other schools? How does the
academy compare to other local schools? How does it compare to other similar academies
nationally?
Consult - How does the academy seek the views of all its stakeholders? What mechanisms
are in place for the academy to achieve a balance and considered view of all its stakeholders?
Compete - How does the academy secure efficient and effective services? Is the academy
receiving what it requires to a high enough standard and at a competitive price?
Improving educational results
At St Augustine’s Catholic Primary & Nursery School our results continue to improve.

To ensure standards are continually raised the Academy closely evaluates its performance in
all our outcomes.
Pupil Premium is spent judiciously and monitored and evaluated at the end of the year.
The Academy works in partnership with the Nottingham Education Diocese, the St Barnabas
Trust, the local cluster of schools and neighbouring schools. It also has strong community
links.
The Directors’ Approach:
The Directors together with the academy leaders apply the principles of best value when
making decisions about:

Allocation of resources to best promote the aims and values of the academy.

Targeting of resources to best improve standards and quality of provision.

Use of resources to best support the various educational needs of all pupils.

Making comparisons with other similar schools using data provided by the DfE.

Challenge proposals, examining them for effectiveness, efficiency, cost, quality and
suitability.

Consult with individuals and organisations on the quality and suitability of services we
provide.
This will apply in particular to:


pupils’ welfare

health and safety

Staffing:
Directors together with the academy leadership team produce a staff structure that provides
best value in terms of quality of teaching and learning, as well as address the whole schools
objectives.
Use of Premises:
Directors together with the academy leadership team will consider the most appropriate use of
teaching areas, support areas and communal areas, to provide the best environment for
teaching & learning and support services.
Use of Resources:
Directors together with the academy leadership team will decide on the most appropriate way
to deploy equipment, materials and services to provide pupils and staff with resources which
best support the quality of teaching and learning. The academy actively promotes use of the
site by the community, outside of school hours, providing it does not compromise the
academy’s core purpose and financially the activity operates on a self-sufficient basis.
Quality of Teaching:
Directors together with the academy leadership team review the quality of curriculum provision
and quality of teaching, to provide parents and pupils with:

a curriculum which meets the requirements of national, local and individual needs.

teaching which builds on previous learning and has high expectations of children’s
achievements.
Quality of Learning:
Directors together with the academy leaders review the quality of children’s learning, to provide
teaching which enables children to achieve nationally expected progress and meet locally set
targets, e.g. setting of annual pupil achievement targets.
Purchasing:
Directors together with the academy leadership team develop robust procedures for assessing
need, and obtain goods and services which provide ‘best value’ in terms of suitability,
efficiency, time, and cost.
Pupils’ Welfare:
Directors together with the academy leadership team review the quality of the academy
environment and the school ethos, in order to provide a supportive environment conducive to
learning and recreation.

Health & Safety:
Directors together with the academy leadership team ensure that regular reviews of the
academy environment, procedures, equipment and risk assessments are all carried out, in
order to provide a safe working environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
Monitoring:
These areas are monitored for Best Value by:

In-house monitoring by the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team, Local Catholic
Headteachers. Leaders within school e.g. observations, work sampling/scrutiny

Annual performance management target setting meetings

Annual budget planning

Headteachers’ and Business Managers’ regular meetings

Analysis of pupil performance data

Responsible Officer audits

OFSTED inspection reports.

Regular classroom observations by Senior Leadership Team
