NEWSLETTER – ISSUE 9
June 2017
Over 75’s Coordinator
Rita Beedham has recently been appointed as the Surgery’s Over 75’s coordinator. Rita joined our surgery in March 2015 as a receptionist,
previously being employed as a receptionist and administrator for most of
her working life.
Signposting and socially prescribing are fast becoming essential tools to
help combat the potentially devastating effects of loneliness and isolation,
both of which factor heavily in the health and wellbeing of this particularly
susceptible age group.
Over 75’s co-ordinator is in essence, a signposting role. Utilising a coordinator with the right skill set, affording the time to listen to patients,
not only helps build patient/surgery trust, but allows the co-ordinator time
to hear what may not be being said, which is crucial in recognising any
further social and/or medical needs of those individuals where no net is in
place. The individual patient can then be supported and directed where
necessary. The co-ordinator liaises with hospitals, social services,
pharmacies and many other external organisations to ensure the best
information and support is available with the least amount of stress to the
patient.
Should you be interested in speaking with Rita, please call either surgeries
on 01724 877744 or 01724 742300 leaving a message when Rita will get
back to you as soon as she is able.
Calling all fresher’s!!
Young teenagers and 'fresher' students going to university for the first time are advised to have a vaccination
to prevent meningitis W disease.
The Men ACWY vaccine is given by a single injection into the upper arm and protects against four different
strains of the meningococcal bacteria that cause meningitis and septicaemia – meningococcal (Men) A, C, W
and Y.
Children aged 13 to 14 (school year 9) will be offered the Men ACWY vaccine in school as part of the routine
adolescent schools programme, but Students going to university or college for the first time, including
overseas and mature students up to the age of 25, should contact their GP to have the Men ACWY vaccine,
ideally before the start of, or as soon as possible after the start, of the academic year.
If you fall into the above category speak to a receptionist to book in for the vaccine.

You only need to have the vaccine once and
it will protect you for life.

PPG EVENT
Members of the PPG held two recruitment days on 02nd and
08th May 2017 – one at Ashby Clinic and the other at West
Common Lane surgeries.
Our friendly group members: Nass, Tina and Brenda
approached patients and explained how the Patients
Participation Group worked and further expressions of
interest forms were handed out. All this was done with a
view to encourage more patients to join the group. In
addition some patients were shown how to use the kiosk –
where patients can measure their own blood pressure,
weight and register other health interests on their personnel
record. This did create quite a lot of interest at West
Common Lane
The recruitment days were quite successful although new
members are very welcome. Should any patients wish to join
the group forms are available at both receptions.
Are you or someone you know an army veteran?
Telling the GP practice about your veteran status will trigger the transfer of your full medical documentation
from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to your GP and enable you to benefit from veteran-specific services, like
prosthetics and mental health.
If you have served in the armed forces please inform a member of reception.
