KERALA SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY
Greetings from the President…
It is with great pleasure that we are releasing the next
issue of the News Letter of Kerala Sociological Society.
The Society enters into a new phase of its transition with
the entry of many new members, most of whom represent
the new generation of Sociologists. I wish all new comers
a warm welcome and put the plea before them that the
responsibility vested in you is so drastic that the world
around us is stirring very fast with new technological and
social advancements and many so called social upheavals.
We need to cope with the transitions which may happen to
the generation today in the event of a Communication and
Mass Social Media Revolution. The concomitant spatial
mobility and resultant social transfusions in spatial,
socio - cultural and religion – ethic boulevards of modern
life are also to be seriously dealt with.
I wish all the best compliments for the forthcoming get together
of Sociologists in Kerala and outside at our Annual National
Conference in Zamorin’s Guruvayoorappan College, Calicut
which is one of the historical and traditional abodes of
knowledge in Northern Kerala. I would also appeal you to
initiate proficient academic groundings to mobilize and equip
our students in the various institutes and colleges so as to
elicit ample academic zest in them.
With best regards,
R K Varghese

About the Theme of the Conference
“Sociology of Spatial Transformations”
Space is one of the most significant concepts for discussion in social
science. The analysis of space helps to create an understanding of the
different processes involved in the construction and transformation of
spaces, the consequences of which is evident in the different aspects of
social life. Spatial transformation is leaving an indelible mark on the
contemporary society.
The relation between the social and the spatial is as much practical as
well as a theoretical. David Harvey’s explanation of socio-spatial
transformation processes as an expression of ‘space-time compression’
revolutionizes the objective qualities of space and time in such a way that
we are forced to alter, how we represent the world to ourselves.
Lefebvre’s argument that space is a social product helps to focus on the
contradictory, conflictual, and political character of the processes of
production of space. The emergence of ‘translocalities’ is also quite
relevant in the analysis of spatial transformations. Any discussion of
space and spatial transformation cannot exclude the socio political
dimensions involved in the process. This conference aims to bring out the
dynamics of spatial transformations, its causes and consequences.
