ANNOUNCEMENT
The treatment of olive mill wastewaters (OMW) can be achieved satisfactory by various
techniques proposed so far. However, as these techniques have a high fixed and operational
cost, the majority of olive mills cannot afford to adopt them, perpetuating the pollution
problems. As the cost for installing such efficient systems seems not decreasing, a profit
from possible useful by-products, deriving from OMW treatment, could contribute significantly
to the problem solution. As an example, the main objective of the research project PANELEA
is the separation of OMW, by using appropriate processes (mainly ultrafiltration and reverse
osmosis), into valuable fractions: a “nutritive fraction” that can be used as fertilizer or animal
feed complement, a “phytotoxic fraction” suitable as ecological herbicide, and pure water for
recycling. These products it is expected to attain a significant market value and thus the
whole process of OMW treatment turns out as profitable and viable.
The PANELEA partnership, in the framework of the PANELEA research project, and
intending to disseminate the OMW treatment methods with technical and economical
feasibility, organises a scientific Workshop on December 17, 2004, at the Institute of
Chemical Engineering and High Temperature Chemical Processes, Patras, Greece.
In this Workshop, Research & Technology Development (RTD) performers and industrial
partners in projects funded by EU are invited to attend and to present some of their results,
related to the above subject. Moreover, olive mill owners’ associations (potential end-users)
are invited from Spain, Italy, and Greece, as well as relevant scientists and officers, in order
to spread out at the maximum possible way the exploitation possibilities of the innovative
techniques on cost-effective utilization of OMW.
