4-H Project Area Blast off to Space – Sun Paper Plate Project Skills: The youth will learn about the sun. They will also practice their tracing and cutting skills Life Skills: Developing Self Leading Self and Others Communicating with others Problem Solving Decision Making Hand/eye coordination Academic Standard: Science. E.4.4 Identify celestial objects (stars, sun, moon, planets) in the sky, noting changes in patterns of those objects over time BACKGROUND The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is round in shape. It is actually white, but from the earth it looks yellow. WHAT TO DO Sun Paper Plate 1. Give each youth a paper plate 2. Paint the back side of a paper plate yellow 3. Set the paper plate aside to dry 4. Have each youth trace their hand 8 times 5. Cut out the tracings 6. Glue or staple the handprint tracings to the paper plate. The fingers are the sun’s rays. 7. Color in the sun, drawing a mouth and a nose. Either draw the eyes or glue on googly eyes. To avoid wasting a lot of construction paper, cut the paper into small squares just large enough for the youth to trace their hands on.
