Blast off to Space – Sun Paper Plate
Project Skills:
The youth will learn about the sun.
They will also practice their tracing
and cutting skills

BACKGROUND
The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is round in
shape. It is actually white, but from the earth it looks yellow.
WHAT TO DO
Sun Paper Plate
1. Give each youth a paper plate
2. Paint the back side of a paper plate yellow
3. Set the paper plate aside to dry
4. Have each youth trace their hand 8 times
5. Cut out the tracings
6. Glue or staple the handprint tracings to the paper plate. The
fingers are the sun’s rays.
7. Color in the sun, drawing a mouth and a nose. Either draw
the eyes or glue on googly eyes.

Kindergarten – 1st grade
Time:
60 minutes
Supplies Needed:
 Yellow Construction paper
 Markers or crayons
 Paper Plate
 Glue/Stapler
 Ruler
 Scissors
 Googly Eyes
 Paint brushes
 Paint

 What is a solar system?
o Planets, moons, comets, asteroids, minor planets,
dust and gases
 What does the sun do for us? What does it give us?
 What shape is the sun?
o Round/spherical
 What color does it look like?
o Yellow, but it is actually white
 How many planets are in the solar system?
o 8 – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune
HELPFUL HINTS
1. To avoid wasting a lot of construction paper, cut the paper
into small squares just large enough for the youth to trace
their hands on.
