As consumers, why would we want these toxic chemicals around us and our families? The problem is that most
consumers are not aware of these hidden dangers and how pervasive these health threats can be. This is why it is so
important for us to educate ourselves and find out what toxins we are regularly exposed to, ways to limit or reduce our
exposure, and what products to use that are safe and effective alternatives.
This is where Young Living is here to help!
UNSAFE ALL PURPOSE CLEANERS: Some all-purpose cleaners contain the sudsing agents diethanolamine (DEA) and
triethanolamine (TEA). When these substances come into contact with nitrites they react to form nitrosamines –
carcinogens that readily penetrate the skin. Many cleaners also contain “fragrance,” which can contain as many as 200
undisclosed chemicals.
SAFE Young Living Cleaners Alternatives with Thieves Essential Oil:
Thieves® essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary
essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. Inspired by the legend of four 15th-century
French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals used
while robbing the dead and dying, Thieves is one of Young Living’s most popular products.
With the benefits of Thieves oil including cleaning power and an irresistibly spicy scent, Young Living offers it as an
essential oil blend and as an important ingredient in a full range of home cleaning and personal care products, from dish
soap to toothpaste. Looking to make your home smell as clean as it looks? Diffuse Thieves oil throughout the house for
an aroma that makes every room smell more like fall baking than harsh cleaning formulas.
Two great examples of Thieves Essential Oil Uses: Refresh musty carpets by adding 5 drops of Thieves to a cup of
baking soda; combine well and let sit overnight until the oil is absorbed. Sprinkle over carpets and vacuum thoroughly.
Diffuse 6–8 drops of Thieves to help create an environment of peace and security. Customize your Thieves experience by
adding a few drops of Orange, Tangerine, or Nutmeg essential oil.

UNSAFE CHILD CARE PRODUCTS: A report by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that 61% of children’s bath
products contain formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, which are linked to cancer and skin allergies. Avoid using products that
list ingredients that may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane such as sodium myreth sulfate and PEG compounds and
products that contain formaldehyde releasing preservatives such as quaternium-15.
SAFE Alternatives Young Living Child Care Products: KidScents Slique Toothpaste, KidScents Oil Collection,
KidScents Tender Tush, KidScents Shampoo, KidScents MightyVites Chewable Tablets, KidScents MightyZyme
Chewable Tablets, KidScents Lotion, and KidScents Bath Gel.
UNSAFE SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER: Many shampoos contain sodium laureth sulfate, a strong chemical detergent
that causes foaming. While this chemical is not cancer causing itself, it is associated with possible carcinogens in some
products. Look for shampoos that are plant oil based and petroleum free. Many conditioners contain sodium laureth
sulfate, a strong chemical detergent that causes foaming. While this chemical is not cancer causing itself, it is associated
with possible carcinogens in some products. Other chemicals to avoid in conditioner are phthalates and parabens, which
have estrogenic effects that have been linked to breast cancer.
SAFE Alternatives Young Living Shampoo & Conditioner: Animal Scents Shampoo, Copaiba Vanilla Shampoo,
KidScents Shampoo, Lavender Mint Daily Shampoo, Lavender Volume Shampoo,
UNSAFE DEODORANTS & ANTIPERSPIRANT: The main ingredient used in most antiperspirants is aluminum, which is
a metal used to block sweat from escaping the pores. Aluminum has been linked to breast cancer in women and an
increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Other chemicals to avoid in deodorant include parabens and phthalates, triclosan
and propylene glycol.
SAFE Alternatives Young Living Deodorants: AromaGuard Meadow Mist Deodorant and AromaGuard Mountain Mist
Deodorant
UNSAFE LAUNDRY SOAP: A common chemical found in laundry detergent are petroleum distillates, or napthas, which
have been linked to cancer, lung damage and mucous membrane damage. Many detergents also contain “fragrance,”
which can contain as many as 200 undisclosed chemicals.
SAFE Alternatives Young Living Laundry Soap: Thieves Laundry Soap
UNSAFE HAND SOAP: Many antibacterial hand soaps contain triclosan (or the related triclocarbon). Triclosan is linked
to liver and inhalation toxicity, and even low levels of triclosan may disrupt thyroid function. What’s more, a US FDA
advisory committee found that use of antibacterial soaps provides no benefits over plain soap and water.
SAFE Alternatives Young Living Hand Soap: Bar Soaps: Lavender Rosewood, Lemon Sandalwood, Melaleuca
Geranium, Morning Start, Peppermint Cedarwood, Sacred Mountain, Thieves, Valor, and Dead Sea Mud Soap.
Hand Soaps: Lavender Foaming Hand Soap, Thieves Foaming Hand Soap & Refill.
UNSAFE MOISTURIZERS AND LOTIONS: The chemicals BHA and BHT are used mainly in moisturizers and makeup as
preservatives. Both are suspected endocrine disruptors and BHA has been linked to cancer. Many lotions also contain
parabens, parabens, which have estrogenic effects that have been linked to breast cancer.
SAFE Hand & Body Lotion: Hand & Body Lotions: Genesis, Lavender, Sensation, and V6 Oil Enhanced Vegetable Oil.
UNSAFE SHAVING CREAM: Chemicals to avoid in shaving cream include DMDM hydantoin, PEG/ceteareth/
polyethylene, triclosan and “fragrance.” Companies don’t have to reveal what’s in their fragrances, which may contain as
many as 200 unknown chemicals. Looking for words like “fragrance-free” or “sulfate-free” is a good place to start when
searching for more natural products.
SAFE Shaving Cream: Mirah Shave Oil, Shutran Shave Cream plus any Young Living Foaming Hand Soap.
UNSAFE Sunscreen: Avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone, a synthetic estrogen that penetrates the skin and can disrupt
the hormone system. Another chemical to avoid is vitamin A, also called retinyl palmitate or retinol, which may be linked to
skin tumors and lesions.
SAFE Young Living Sunscreen: Young Living DOES NOT currently produce a Sunscreen, please look for sunscreens
with the active ingredients zinc oxide, avobenzone and mexoryl SX.
UNSAFE TOOTHPASTE AND DENTAL CARE: Triclosan and sodium laureth sulfate are two chemicals commonly found
in toothpaste that should be avoided. Triclosan is a synthetic antimicrobial chemical designed to kill germs that has been
linked to hormone disruption and an increased risk of breast cancer. Sodium laureth sulfate is not cancer causing itself,
but it has been associated with possible carcinogens in some products.
SAFE Young Living Toothpaste and Dental Care: Dentarome Plus Toothpaste, KidScents Slique Toothpaste, Thieves
Dental Floss, Thieves Aromabright Toothpaste, Thieves Dentarome Ultra Toothpaste, Thieves Fresh Essence
Mouthwash, and Thieves Mints.
UNSAFE AIR FRESHENERS: Air fresheners have become a staple in many American homes and offices, marketed with
the promise of creating a clean, healthy, and sweet-smelling indoor atmosphere. But many of these products contain
phthalates (pronounced thal-ates)—hazardous chemicals known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and
reproductive problems. NRDC’s independent testing of 14 common air fresheners, none of which listed phthalates as an
ingredient, uncovered these chemicals in 86 percent (12 of 14) of the products tested, including those advertised as “allnatural” or “unscented.”
SAFE Air Fresheners: Diffuse Essential Oils in one of Young Living Essential Oil Diffusers.
We live in a chemical world; every day we are exposed to toxins, chemicals, and pollutants. It can be overwhelming to
even think if we can avoid all of this exposure. Even some of the so-called “green” products are damaging to our health.
It may not be possible to avoid ALL of the toxins in our lives, but there are plenty of ways to significantly reduce your
family’s exposure through simple lifestyle changes and behaviors. You can decrease your family’s exposure to toxins by
using essential oils for cleaning. It’s really not as hard as it might seem.
