PROFESSOR JUDYTH SACHS PARTICIPATION PRIZE
TO BE AWARDED FOR STUDENT PARTICIPATION DURING THE 2012 ACADEMIC YEAR
As the third pillar of the undergraduate curriculum, PACE (Participation and Community Engagement) is a key
component of the University's strategic direction, emphasising the University's commitment to excellence in
research, learning and teaching, and community engagement.
Participation units provide an academic framework through which students can engage with the community in a
range of activities, learn through participation, develop their capabilities and build skills that employers value.
Partner organisations in the community also benefit from PACE, as Participation activities are designed with their
needs in mind.
The annual “Professor Judyth Sachs Participation Prizes” have been established by the Deputy Vice Chancellor
(Provost) to reward student/s for outstanding Participation achievement. One prize to the value of $1,0001 will be
awarded in each Faculty per year. The Prizes are very prestigious, and will not be awarded if candidates are not
considered to be of sufficient merit. Recipients will also have the Prizes recorded on their Academic Transcript and
Australian Higher Education Graduate Statement.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible for a Professor Judyth Sachs Participation Prize, a student (or group of students) must have undertaken
an approved Participation Activity as part of an accredited Participation Unit in which they were enrolled in the
calendar year to which the Prize applies (see attached for List of Participation Units for 2012). For 2012, the current
round of Prizes, this includes Participation units that ran in Session 1 2012, Session 2 2012, the Winter Vacation
2012, and Session 3 2012-13. Students who were enrolled in a unit in 2012 that was co-badged with an accredited
Participation Unit are also eligible to apply.
SELECTION PROCESS & CRITERIA
Eligible students are encouraged to apply for consideration for a Prize and all applications will be assessed by a
Selection Committee consisting of the
 Associate Dean Learning and Teaching of the Faculty (Chair)
 PACE Academic and Programs Director, and
 Academic Director of Participation of the Faculty
1
Pairs or groups of students who completed a single Participation activity together are welcome to apply, as are students who undertook their
activity on an individual basis. For individuals or pairs, the value of the prize awarded will be $1,000 per person; for groups of 3 or more, the
value of the prize will be $3,000 in total. If a group of students apply for the Prize, each group member must be listed on the application, and
the prize money is to be divided between the group. The selection committee will consult with the relevant Unit Convenor to confirm the
membership of the Participation Activity groups.
1
Recommendations of the Selection Committee will be made to the Provost, whose decision will be final.
Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:
1. The quality and value of the contribution made by the student/s to the partner organisation and/or the
broader community;
2. The quality of the student’s reflection on how the activity enabled them to achieve one or more of the
Learning Outcomes of the unit;
3. The quality and value of the Participation activity to the student/s, particularly in terms of meeting
professional and personal goals.
APPLICATION PROCESS
1. Applicant/s complete the Professor Judyth Sachs Participation Prize Application Form, which is available
from the PACE website
2. Applicant/s lodge the Application Form with the PACE Office (see Application Form for details of how to
