Name_________________________________________________Per._____________Date___ Enzyme Experiment Research Plan Due Date:_____________Dec. 9th, Tues______________ Read the following directions carefully Your Research Plan/Results and Conclusions should be in the following format Read all sections-A through G! Proofread and do not wait until the last minute! Format: 12 font New Times Roman or Ariel, double spaced, centered headings, spelling correct. (each section also has individual instructions). A. QUESTION BEING ADDRESSED What is the question you are trying to answer by doing your research? (this is something that you can only answer after doing some background research) For this assignment you should research the following questions: What type of molecule is an enzyme? Explain how they function (include terms: substrate, active site, products, activation energy, biological catalyst. . Describe the purpose of the enzyme Catalase in living things. Explain how hydrogen peroxide is produced in living things and it’s function in living things. Describe at least 3 things that could influence enzyme action. This part of the assignment should be headed BACKGROUND RESEARCH, typed according to the correct format, and have the Bibliography also. There are no minimum number of sources (1 if fine if it is good), so citations are only necessary if you have more than 1. This should be 150-250 words (1/2 to 1 page only!). B. HYPOTHESIS What is the hypothesis? Use an If…., then…. format. This should include your Independent and Dependent Variable you will be using in your lab. C. MATERIALS The material list should be in the following bulleted format and follow the guidelines listed below. Items are not numbered Size and quantity of each item listed Specific names and/or scientific names are used All measurements in metric units (For this lab, we will give you the possible materials, if you use something different you must add it.) Your available materials: 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Test tubes, beakers, graduated cylinders, droppers Filter paper Raw carrot, potato, calf liver (if you use another substance it must be listed) Ice Hotplate Acid solution Base solution Morter and pestle (for crushing) Blender Distilled water With a partner, after doing background research, you will design your own experiment using the above materials ( you do not have to use them all, but you must have a source of catalase and you must at least use hydrogen peroxide). You will write a very detailed step by step procedure according to the directions below. D. PROCEDURES The procedure should be written in the following format and follow the guidelines: 1. Steps should be numbered. 2. Each action is written as a different step Ex. 1. Fill 100 ml beaker with 25 mL of H2O2. 2. Measure 25 ml of catalase with a 50 ml graduated cylinder. 3. Pour the 25 ml of H2O2 into the 100 ml beaker, NOT IN PARAGRAPH FORM. 3. It is written so that another student or researcher could exactly reproduce the experiment. 4. Steps include all equipment used in the experimental set-up. 5. Steps include an exact description of how measurements will be taken and tools that will be used 6. Steps are written in the 3rd person. Do not write your procedure in 1st person (no I, We, You) 7. Include enough repeated trials in the procedure, this will depend on your particular experiment, more is better (15 trials is the minimum) 8. Identify a control in the steps. 9. Describe constants and plan for uniform conditions for all trials E. DATA ANALYSIS You need to describe how you will analyze your data. You will use descriptive and inferential statistics to evaluate the validity of your data. Write a statement to this effect. “Descriptive and inferential statistics will be used to evaluate the data.” DUE DATE: Points Possible Question/Short Background Research This is in the correct format and a question that can be answered by the experiment. Format Paper is written in the correct format, no spelling or grammar issues, correct APA format, font size and type, Headings are centered. Hypothesis This is in an If…, then…. format? It addresses both the IV and DV. 15 5 5 Materials Items not numbered (bullet points), size and number of each item listed, specific names and/or scientific names used, measurements in Metrics, all necessary equipment is included, ordering information if included 10 Procedures Numbered steps, each action a different step, can be reproduced, specific equipment listed in steps, written in 3rd person, repeated trials, control included and described, constants and uniform conditions described 25 Total 60 Points Earned
