Big Idea(s)
What enduring
understandings are
essential for
application to new
situations within or
beyond this content?
Shapes All Around Me
Shapes are all around us.
Shapes are the things we see.
Shapes are alike and different than each other.
Shapes can fit together and come apart to make new shapes.
Essential
Question(s)
How does learning about shapes help us in real life?
What questions will
provoke and sustain
student engagement
while focusing
learning?
What shapes can we find in our environment?
How are shapes related?
How are shapes alike and different?
How can shapes be described?
How can shapes be sorted?
How do shapes fit together and come apart?
What happens when you change a shape’s position?
Enduring
Standard(s)
Enduring Understandings
Describe the physical world using geometric ideas and vocabulary
Which standards
provide endurance
beyond the course,
leverage across
multiple disciplines,
and readiness for the
next level?
Use basic shapes and spatial reasoning to model objects in the
environment and construct complex shapes
Standards for Mathematical Practice
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving. Students will
make sense of shapes in their world by recognizing, building and
creating new shapes.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Students will use numerals
to refer to number of sides while observing pictures of shapes and
recognize that combining shapes can change the number of sides.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Students can clearly express, explain, organize and consolidate
their ideas about shapes while composing them.
4. Model with mathematics. Students will begin to represent shapes
in their world by using drawings or objects.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically. Students will explore the use
of tools to explore shapes in the world around them, whenever
appropriate.
6. Attend to precision. Students will express their ideas and
reasoning while using appropriate math vocabulary in regards to
the shapes and their attributes.
7. Look for and make use of structure. Students will recognize
patterns while exploring for shapes such as triangles can be
different sizes or colors and still be called a triangle.
Kindergarten Unit 1
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Students
will begin to notice that as the number of sides increase on a
shape, a new shape is created (triangle has 3 sides, a rectangle
has 4 sides, a pentagon has 5 sides and hexagon has 6 sides).
Standards for Mathematical Content
K.G.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes,
and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such
as above, below, in front of, behind, and next to.
K.G.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or
overall size.
K.G.5 Model shapes in the world by building shapes from
components and drawing shapes (2-D).
K.G.6 Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes.

Outcomes
What must students
learn by the end of
the unit?
Performance
I can…
I can describe the position above.
I can describe the position below.
I can describe the position behind.
I can describe the position in front of.
I can describe the position beside.
I can describe the position next to.
I can use my position words to tell about where a shape is in my
environment.
I know that when a shape has a different size, it still has the
same name.
I know that when a shape moves around, it still has the same
name.
I can recognize and identify a square.
I can recognize and identify a circle.
I can recognize and identify a triangle.
I can recognize and identify a rectangle.
I can recognize and identify a hexagon.
I can identify shapes in my environment.
I can look at objects in the real world and find the shapes in
them.
I can put shapes together to make new shapes or larger shapes.
Students who demonstrate understanding can…
