Goodwood PS – School Nutrition Program
The school nutrition program (SNP) or, “snack bins”, as the kids call it has been successfully
implemented and has now settled in to its second year. The purpose of the SNP is to help provide
nutritious meals and snacks to children and youth to support their learning and healthy development.
The snack bins have been welcomed widely by students and staff and I would like to share some
information about the snack bins with all staff, parents and students.

The snack bins are available for any student who requires a snack
The items chosen for the bins follow clear healthy eating guidelines required by the Ministry
(PPM 150) and are non-perishable. They are low in sodium, sugar and fat. No items contain
Trans fats and the juice boxes contain 100% fruit juice
All items are nut free
The snack bins in each classroom are monitored by the teachers and contain non-perishable
items
Apples are available in the front foyer every day
Watermelon is sometimes provided as a healthy snack at events such as jump rope for heart and
track-and-field day
Low fat, low sugar mini muffins made by a parent in a Ministry-inspected and approved kitchen
are available on most days at the office
Cheese strings are available at the office on some days
Funding for the program is from the Ministry of Children and Youth services, through the
Peterborough Family Resource Centre
All students are welcome to use the snack program as needed, however it is definitely not meant as a
replacement for lunch or snack items sent from home. Please remind your children how that they are to
eat items sent from home first and to use the snack bins responsibly so that there are always items
available for those who need it.
I would like to thank all the staff, students and volunteers who have helped to make the program a
success. We are looking forward to continuing and expanding the program over the school year.
