FIRST YEAR LABORATORY: PROJECT PROPOSAL - 2009 PROJECT TITLE CODE Simulating defect structure in a model magnet DEMONSTRATOR Paul Eastham E-MAIL ADDRESS [email protected] TELEPHONE NUMBER 0207 594 7542 ROOM NUMBER 816 CMTH08 RESEARCH GROUP CMTH PROJECT OUTLINE: The textbook cartoon of a ferromagnet, such as Iron, has all the microscopic magnetic moments aligned with one another. In fact this does not happen – in ferromagnets the moments align inside regions called domains, but can point in different directions in different domains. In this project you will look at one of the general causes of such domain structure, by developing and studying computer simulations of a simple model of a magnet. You would need to be confident that you can write a C++ program using the vector template and nested loops, plot your results effectively, and be happy working with very simplified models This Project is available on: Thurs/Fri Students: Please write your name below if you are planning to bid for this project. You must also fill out the bidding form! Code: PROJECT ASSESSMENT SHEET – 2009 Leave blank Are there any safety aspects which need special attention (i.e. use of lasers, radioactive sources)? No Is this a computing project?
