Daily Lesson Plan
Big Idea:
Genes are segments of DNA molecules. Inserting, deleting, or substituting DNA can alter genes, passing it on to
every cell that develops from it.
Essential Question:
Why do organisms have their specific traits?
SWBAT & NJCCCS: Explain how mutations & new gene combinations may have an effect on organisms/species (5.5.12C2)
Explanation
Lesson
Components
Present lesson inquiry question: Is there ethical implications to scientific gene manipulation? Present the “super cow”
National Geographic media clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nmkj5gq1cQU&feature=fvw.
Elicit the advantages and disadvantages and discuss.
Application
Divide class into 6 groups. Using laptops and the following wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_genetic_engineering)
elicit information supporting/arguing against genetic manipulation in humans (3 pro, 3 cons). Each group report out, conduct
whole class discussion, chart results.
Synthesis
Present media clip to review lesson’s terminology and concepts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weAp0SpRz68
HMWK: Text reading pg 217 – 219, section 5.1 and complete “Critical Thinking” Question #3 in journal.
