SWBAT & NJCCCS: Explain how mutations & new gene combinations may have an effect on organisms/species (5.5.12C2) Explanation Lesson Components Present lesson inquiry question: Is there ethical implications to scientific gene manipulation? Present the “super cow” National Geographic media clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nmkj5gq1cQU&feature=fvw. Elicit the advantages and disadvantages and discuss. Application Divide class into 6 groups. Using laptops and the following wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_genetic_engineering) elicit information supporting/arguing against genetic manipulation in humans (3 pro, 3 cons). Each group report out, conduct whole class discussion, chart results.
