RESEARCH CENTRE AT UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL
Québec Network for Research
on Protein Function, Structure,
and Engineering
PROTEO is a dynamic team of dedicated researchers investigating complex issues in the field
of protein research. Their work has a significant impact in economically strategic sectors like
health, environment, and energy.
MISSION
PROTEO’s mission is to
PROTEO director: Normand Voyer, Faculty of Science and Engineering
>Address the major scientific challenges
of the post-genomic era
CENTRE DESCRIPTION
>Study model protein systems using
a novel transdisciplinary approach
>Establish a critical mass of researchers
in a strategic sector of Québec’s
economy
PROTEO scientists also try to translate the knowledge gained through their investigations towards practical applications.
PROTEO’S research niche is a fast-growing strategic sector with clear economic benefits for the pharma, biopharma
and biotech industries of Québec.

STATISTICS AT 1 JUNE 2013
PROTEO is a research centre recognized by Université Laval and a provincial strategic network of Fonds de recherche
du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQ-NT). It brings together 39 research groups from nine scientific institutions
who study all aspects of proteins from their composition to their physiological roles.
ADVANTAGES
PROTEO offers a range of benefits to student members,
including several types of financial support. Undergraduate scholarships are available to students interested
in doing an introductory summer research internship,
and graduate scholarships are available for students
continuing their studies. PROTEO also offers a unique
travel grant program that gives students an opportunity
to present their findings at international conferences.
Lastly, PROTEO student members interested in doing a
two-to-six month paid internship are eligible to apply for
FRQNT’s international internship program. These programs
help students enhance their training and curriculum vitae,
directly improving their competitiveness in government
agencies scholarship programs such as FRQNT, FRQS,
NSERC, and CIHR. International students are also eligible
for PROTEO scholarships, which is not usually the case for
government granting agency competitions.
Université Laval in the heart of Québec City
is one of Canada’s top research universities,
with nearly 230 graduate programs.
to exchange with colleagues, make contacts, and establish
fruitful collaborations. At PROTEO, students are at the heart
of scientific activities. They organize scientific events, help
manage scholarships and funding, and actively participate
in the decision-making process by being represented on
the Board of Directors.
PROTEO students can also take advantage of a broad
array of state of the art instrumentationand a range
of diversified expertise to facilitate and develop their
research projects.
A global leader in numerous cutting-edge
disciplines, Université Laval educates
tomorrow’s leaders and prepares them to
face current and future challenges in every
field of knowledge.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
recent years by Le Soleil newspaper and Québec Science magazine. PROTEO members also
organized several national and international scientific meetings attended by thousands of
researchers worldwide. These achievements demonstrate PROTEO’s scientific leadership
on the international stage.
But first and foremost, PROTEO best achievements are student members, who graduated
with the world-class training and that are currently acting as leaders on their own.

Over the past two years PROTEO members published more than 200 scientific articles
in top-tier journals and delivered over 250 presentations at conferences, meetings, and
events around the world over the past two years. Four members obtained a joint $1,650,000
research grant through NSERC’s CREATE program to train highly skilled personnel in the
field of bionanomachines. In addition, PROTEO members participated in several outreach
activities, including public lectures, activities at miscellanous fairs , and radio shows. In
the past few years, PROTEO scientists have made several major discoveries related to
spider silk, ion channels, Parkinson’s disease research, and cancer detection. Science
programs like Les années lumières, Découverte, and Le code Chastenay have showcased
these breakthroughs, which were ranked among the top ten most important discoveries in
