I studied part-time and obtained one national diploma and two law degrees. After serving with several detective branches and units I was appointed as the commander of the Child Protection Unit, East Metropole in 1996. It was a field that interested me, and a post I occupied for the next fifteen years. During that time I investigated a number of high-profile cases involving rape, sexual abuse and exploitation resulting in convictions and long prison terms, such as S v James McNeil, S v Jan Johannes Schietekat, S v John Creasey and others. I served on an ad hoc advisory committee to the then Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Ms Mapisa-Nqakula, who was responsible for the Films and Publications Board at the time. I participated in the investigation of an international child sexual abuse and child pornography syndicate, the so-called “Operation Wonderland” case which also involved police agencies in the United Kingdom and the United States. I am an experienced police investigator and have testified as such in criminal courts frequently during the past 28 years. During 2010 and 2011 I was the prosecutor in a number of SAPS disciplinary hearings in Cape Town. I was also the trial officer in several others. During that time I dismissed six members of the Service for serious misconduct. I left the South African Police Service on 31 December 2011 and completed my studies towards the LLB degree in May 2012. The degree was conferred in October 2012 and I was admitted as an advocate in December 2012. I completed the LSSA/UNISA School for Legal Practice course in 2013 and will write the attorney’s board examination in August 2014.
