Main Organs (pt. 1)
Nose: The nose is the primary opening for the respiratory system, allowing air
into the body
Mouth: The mouth, also referred to as the oral cavity, is the secondary exterior
opening, working alongside the nose.
Pharynx: The pharynx, also called the throat, is a funnel of muscle that extends
from the respiratory openings to the esophagus and larynx.
Main Organs (pt. 2)
Larynx: Also known as the voice box, the larynx can be found below the pharynx,
in the anterior portion of the neck.
Trachea: The Trachea, also known as the wind pipe, is a tube made of cartilage
rings that are lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium.
Bronchi: The bronchi are two tubes stemming off of the end of the trachea. Each
tube is connected to a lung.
Main Organs (pt. 3)
Diaphragm: The diaphragm is an important muscle of respiration which is found
beneath the lungs.
Lungs: The air travels to the lungs where the take in oxygen and expel carbon
dioxide
Diseases and Disorders that Affect the Respiratory System

Asthma
○ A condition where a person’s airway become inflamed, narrow, and
produces extra mucus which restricts airflow to a person’s lungs
■ Treated with an inhaler
Lung Cancer
○ A cancer that occurs in a person’s lungs most often affecting smoker
■ Treated with chemotherapy and surgery
Pneumonia
○ An infection that fills the air sacs in one or both lungs with fluid
■ Treated with antibiotics/vaccine
What causes Inhalation?
-The diaphragm creates negative space in the chest cavity
-With negative space in the chest cavity, the airways are able to stay open
-When you inhale, the lungs expand, which creates a low pressure environment
-Through this, the diaphragm becomes vacuum like, and gravity forces air down
the air passage and into the lungs.
The Respiratory System and the Circulatory System
-The respiratory system and the circulatory system are connected at the lungs
-The circulatory system needs oxygen from the lungs to pump the blood
throughout the body, and the respiratory system supplies the oxygen, and helps
the oxygen from the air into the bloodstream
-The systems are linked, because without the distribution of oxygen throughout
the body, the muscles and tissues would not function
