2. Briefly describe the elective.
I plan an elective rotation in radiology. As the development of skills necessary to read and
interpret plain radiographs and a basic knowledge of CT scan interpretation is vital to becoming
a proficient internist I believe that a rotation through the radiology department will help me to
facilitate these goals. I will report to the radiology department where I will get daily assignments
to a senior radiology resident or staff to work alongside them in interpreting plain films and CT
scans. I will also spend some time if possible in observation of other commonly ordered
radiographic tests such as abdominal ultrasound and MRI (focusing attention on MRI of the
thorax, brain when possible).
3. What are the specific goals for the elective? (What will you have accomplished by the end of
the month?)
Medical Knowledge:
1. Understand and master interpretation of chest roentgenology.
2. Understand and have basic knowledge of interpretation of abdominal roentgenology.
3. Develop ability to recognize common abnormal findings on brain computed
tomography images including hemorrhage, ischemia, mass lesions and
ventriculomegaly.
4. Understand principles of image “quality” and the implication on ability to formulate
readings.
5. Develop ability to locate key anatomical structures on abdominal and pelvic CT to
understand “normals” and work to develop understanding of “abnormals”
6. Understand and have basic knowledge of interpretation key abnormal findings on
chest computed tomography including infiltrative processes, bronchiectasis, mass
lesions, lymphadenopathy and mainstem pulmonary emboli.
Patient Care:
1. Develop an understanding of the appropriateness for referral for common imaging
procedures.
2. Understand the importance of providing pertinent clinical information when ordering
imaging procedures to aid in formulating a radiologic diagnosis.

3. Report promptly to assigned reading rooms to aid in completing the daily work load,
and helping to contact ordering physicians when appropriate.
