Week 5 DQ 1:
Review the scenario below and answer the questions that follow:
ABC Hospital is a small, privately owned community hospital. It has been struggling to
survive financially, as reimbursement rates have declined and consumers are being drawn to
the larger state-of-the-art hospital facilities in urban areas that are perceived to have better
quality. ABC Hospital was built in 1960 and has been operating in the same manner for many
decades. The hospital meets legal and regulatory requirements but has not kept pace with
some of the newer technologies and patient conveniences becoming more prevalent in the
health care industry.
o What strategies can the organization take to survive, improve its performance, and
compete with other hospitals over the next 5 years?
o What are some advantages or disadvantages of these strategies? Provide specific
examples to support your answers.
There are tough times for companies around the country in multiple sectors. One of the
ways that one can make sure that a company survives the economic depression and
downturn is to keep on focusing on the patient. This is because patients should be
appreciated not just for their money but for who they are. To achieve this, the hospital need
to ensure that they address the need of their customers and enculturate a srong sense of
belonging and significance. For instance the medical staff can ensure that they approach
complaints with proactive mind states rather than reactive approaches. It is in my opinion
that quality is important because it is the lifeline of the hospital through its reputation and
quality accounts for a third of its reputation. The masjor disadvantage of this is that the
hospital may end up spending too much money on running these quality improvements.
Week 5 DQ 2:
Review the scenario below and answer the questions that follow:
XYZ Health Department provides services to county residents. Budget cuts have forced the
department to cut back on some services and lay off several staff, increasing the workload of
other staff. Morale among staff has declined, and county residents have complained that
they are not treated with dignity and respect and are not receiving high quality care and
service.
o What strategies can XYZ Health Department implement to provide high quality care and
services to the county residents and to help increase customer satisfaction?
o How can these strategies help minimize risk and improve quality? Provide specific
examples to support your answers.
Nothing should be more important than providing safe, high quality care to all of the
patients and delivering that care in an understanding, compassionate manner. It should
be our mission and our passion to provide high quality care and high quality caring.
The department of health can be able to hold themselves accountable for the delivery of
high quality care by tracking their progress by the use of a formal scorecard which can be
used to avail feedback from pertinent families. A secure electronic health record system
would suffice provided it is capable of ensuring that one can view ones medical information
online, keep in touch with ones physician in addition to managing ones appointments and
assessing ones family record. With regard to staff morale, they can be provided with off time
say every Friday as an appreciation gift.
This ensures that there is minimal risk and improved quality because residents will be of the
view that the department is making efforts to maker things better. This will make the
employees see that their welfare is being taken into consideration.
