COUNTRY HEALTH SA YORKE AND NORTHERN REGION PORT PIRIE REGIONAL HEALTH SERVICE 2018 REGISTERED NURSE TRANSITION TO PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE PROGRAM (TPPP) This health service forms part of the Yorke and Northern Rural Region. The TPPP is delivered across the region to increase benefits to new registered nurses as they start their career. Mid North The Mid North community is situated to the north of Adelaide the capital of South Australia, an approximate two and a half to three hours drive. The Mid North health units service a population of approximately 30,000. Port Pirie is a city of 15 000 people, bound on its western border by the Spencer Gulf, and on its Eastern border by the impressive Southern Flinders Ranges. Shopping facilities are of a high standard with a large Regional Shopping Centre being supported by a modern plaza complex. Port Pirie also hosts numerous sporting, cultural and art events. A city of clubs, ovals, racetracks and sporting complexes ensures Port Pirie and the districts sports people are well catered for with almost every sport offered. Alternatively gym facilities are available. The Flinders Ranges, Clare Valley and Yorke Peninsula are within close distance. TPPP in the Mid North In the Mid North there are multiple (usually eight positions) available at 0.84FTE. The 2018 TPPP will commence in January. During the TPPP registered nurses are supported as they develop their practice. Diverse clinical rotations consist of medical ward, surgical ward, one to two health units within the region as well as a short placement in the specialty areas accident and emergency and operating theatre. All TPPP graduates will be supported as they gain clinical experience which includes a 12-16 week placement in one of the rural health units, either Orroroo, Peterborough or Crystal Brook. The Port Pirie Regional Health Service Provides health care to thirty five thousand people in the Mid North area. Consisting of 82 beds, the community is well served by General Practitioners, Resident and Visiting Specialists and a Community and Allied Health Service, as well as General Medical, Surgical, Obstetric and Gerontic facilities. Services provided by Port Pirie Regional Health Services include Surgical, Medical, Paediatric, Haemodialysis and three monitored beds Obstetric service with antenatal midwife and domiciliary midwife Accident and Emergency Department Hospital in the Home service Aged care and Respite Operating Theatre (including Chemotherapy Unit) Dialysis A wide range of community and Allied Health Services are offered. Orroroo, Crystal Brook and Peterborough health services are pleased to be involved in the Yorke and Northern Rural Region RN TPPP. Orroroo Hospital and Orroroo Community Home Orroroo provides active medical treatment, a 24-hour accident and emergency service and care after operations and births. The hospital has 8 acute care beds, 10 Commonwealth Aged care beds and services include aged care, acute medical, post-operative, post natal, palliative care, transitional care packages, rural emergency services, allied health, community nurse and X-Ray facilities. Orroroo has a separate 16 bed Residential Aged Care Facility which is mainly high care. Orroroo is located 265kms north of Adelaide. The attractive main street has excellent local businesses including 2 hotels, clothes shop, pharmacy, supermarket, butcher, fruit and veg, newsagency, hairdresser, beauty therapy, 2 cafés, and quality gift ware stores. Orroroo is situated in the Flinders Ranges with spectacular views and places of interest, bushwalking, bike riding and four wheel driving; there is a Caravan Park, and many lovely B&B’s. Nursing accommodation is available at the hospital. Rotations at Peterborough will expose you to a great range of client diversity and presentations including; mental health, aged care, community Ante and Post Natal care. We comprise of 12 acute beds, 8 long stay aged care beds a 24 hour Accident and Emergency service as well as theatre. We also have an 11 bed commonwealth funded aged care facility on the grounds. The town of Peterborough is located just of the Barrier Highway 117km north of Clare, 110 km east of Port Pirie and 231km north of Adelaide at the eastern end of the Flinders Ranges. The district council of Peterborough has a population of just under 2,000 and is the home of the world famous steam trains. Community services are provided through the Mid North Community Health Service and include leisure and lifestyle programs, home support, community nursing, and diabetes education. The Health Unit has 25 beds with inpatient services which include medical, surgical, same day services and maternity. A 24 hour Accident and Emergency service is also provided as well as an outpatient clinic. In addition to acute services, there are 12 Aged Care places. Maternity care is another strong focus for the Health Service and a Midwifery Group Practice provides midwifery care to women during their pregnancy, birth and postnatally. Medical services are provided by 3 General Practitioners and a Registrar. The Health Service is committed to supporting nursing and midwifery education and provides placements in a variety of programs such as the Vocational Education Training program, enrolled nursing cadet program, nursing and midwifery student program, and the Transition to Professional Nursing. The town of Crystal Brook is located off Highway One approximately 200km north of Adelaide and 28 km south of Port Pirie at the gateway to the Flinders Ranges. The township of Crystal Brook has a population of around 1500 and is the centre of a large cereal growing and wool producing district. On site accommodation is available for students and staff.
