PROFILE SUMMARY
I am a science based archaeologist who is able to work in many different capacities in the field (including dating and
environmental sampling and processing, excavation supervision and direction, topographic survey and more recently
Forensic search and recovery under the remit of the ‘Good Friday Agreement’). I have experience of teaching in
higher education institutions, presenting both scientific and cultural aspects of archaeology to audiences from a
range of backgrounds. I have carried out and completed a number of research projects, including a PhD and postdoctoral project, and regularly carry out commercial work for the University of Bradford.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
 The development of robust and precise chronologies through the use of multiple dating techniques (archaeomagnetic,
optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), AMS radiocarbon dating and tephrochronology), assessing sequences of
dates within a Bayesian framework.
 The assessment of domestic structures using a combination of environmental and geoarchaeological techniques.
 The archaeology of Viking expansion across the North Atlantic region.

SKILLS
Field Skills:
 Excavation, recording and planning of archaeological sites.
 Supervising the excavation of key areas of a site and training new students and volunteers how to excavate.
 Co-ordination and management of dating, environmental and geoarchaeological sampling strategies.
 Surveying archaeological sites and features.
 Carrying out commercial archaeomagnetic dating on a range of sites across the UK.
 Carrying out forensic investigations for the Independent Commission for the Location of Victim Remains (ICLVR).
Laboratory Skills:
 The collection, preparation and analysis of samples for dating, including radiocarbon, archaeomagnetism, optically
stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating and tephra.
 The collection, preparation and analysis of samples for environmental and geoarchaeological studies.
 The application of statistical models to investigate data sets, in particular the combination and analysis of multiple
dating techniques, and their integration with other archaeological information, such as typological sequences and
theoretical models.
 Processing and archiving archaeological records, and the construction of databases.
Teaching:
 University of Birmingham (2009 and 2010): present lectures on the scientific methods of dating for the ‘Archaeological
Practice’ Masters programme.
 University of Bradford (2001-present): presented lectures on the ‘Scientific Methods of Dating I’, ‘Introduction to
Physics and Chemistry’, ‘Scientific Frameworks for Archaeology’, ‘Archaeometry’, and ‘Site to Page’ modules. I
have also delivered practical classes for the modules ‘Archaeological method and theory’, ‘Assessment of Sites and
Monuments’, ‘Instrumental Analysis’ and the ‘Archaeology Field Course’.

 The Post-Excavation Assistant Manager for the Viking Unst Project
 Completion of archaeomagnetic dating reports for commercial and research excavations carried out in the UK.
 The production of reports following the reassessment of site chronologies within a Bayesian framework
 Analysis of archaeobotanical remains recovered from the excavations at Belmont, Jarlshof, Old Scatness Broch, Broo,
Norby (Shetland) and Við Kirkjugarð (Sandoy, Faroe Islands).
Contract fieldwork:
 Forensic Archaeological monitoring on behalf of the Independent Commission for the Recovery of Victims Remains.
 The excavation of sites investigated as part of the ‘Gateway to the Atlantic’ project on Rousay, Orkney.

This post required me to process the commercial dating samples collected by the unit, to train new staff and visitors in the
techniques of sample processing as well as assisting Dr Rhodes in his research to develop the OSL technique.
