Ceasefire: August Arrests Ceasefire is a violence‐reduction strategy coordinating law enforcement and the community with nationally proven results. In Oakland, we are using this intelligence‐driven approach to targets gangs and groups believed to be responsible for the majority of shootings and killings in East Oakland as well as armed robberies and violent crimes in neighborhoods across the City. Ceasefire seeks to combine the best of community energies, social services and strategic law enforcement in a way that will reduce violence far more effectively than these entities operating alone. Violence in Oakland is driven by a small number of people and groups. Ceasefire directly focuses on those groups engaged in violent behavior in a number of ways, including call‐ins and collaborative enforcement. At call‐in meetings, groups and individuals are mandated to meet with affected community members and multiple law enforcement agencies. Among the most important messages is the power the young people have to make choices. They are given information about the consequences—both positive and negative—that their choices bring. Participants are provided the opportunity to change the course of their lives and services are provided for those who wish to receive help. They are also informed about the array of law enforcement tools available to police and the consequences should the called‐in individuals or their associates continue the violence. Recently, several violent groups were identified through Ceasefire intelligence‐gathering efforts. Two operations were conducted, resulting in the arrest of 19 individuals known to be active in or affiliated with violent groups and gangs. These groups are known to actively engage in violent crimes including armed robberies, home burglaries, and illegal gun possession. On August 15, the Oakland Police Department ran a street‐level operation targeting several individuals identified as either a part of or affiliated with identified violent groups.
