Chapter 8: Nationalism and Ultranationalism during Times of Conflict
Nationalism during the First and Second World Wars
Before Reading
Last week...you learned why nations pursue national interests and how other countries are
affected in the process. This week you will be looking at what can happened to a nation-state
during times of conflict/war. During these time periods leaders of nation-states use strategies
to convince citizens to put aside personal heritage/traditions and commit to the nation-states
cause and in fact be willing to die for their country. This is called ultranationalism. It occurs
when the majority of the citizens of a nation-state believe that their leaders are right in going to
war and will dedicate themselves to the war effort in hopes of victory for their country. When
this happens...scary things happen around the world and within one's own country...as you
will see.

Nazi Germany Ultra Nationalism Assignment
Summative Assignment
Introduction:
As you have read in this chapter propaganda is one strategy that leaders of nationstates/countries use to persuade their citizens to believe in the pursuit of the nation’s interest.
For example, Hitler used this strategy to get German people to believe in his cause and plan to
expand Germany. He got them to commit to buying German products to improve the economy
and believe in the importance of rebuilding the military. Hitler helped rekindle a defeated
German spirit and in the process won their commitment to his plans to expand German (i.e. –
national interest).
Step One: Please review pages 167 and 168 in your textbook, Perspectives on Nationalism.
On these two pages you will see how propaganda is used. Various techniques include:
Bandwagon
Card Stacking
Glittering generalities
Name-calling
In order to determine what technique is being used in propaganda you can follow the steps
outlined on these two pages. Please review Steps 1 – 4.
