Guidelines for data abstraction using KIA data abstraction form
General:
1. Please complete all data fields in the form.
2. If the response to a question is a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, please circle the response unambiguously.
3. If a question has more than one correct response among the options given, please circle all the
appropriate responses unambiguously.
4. If you choose ‘Other’ as a response to a question, please characterize the response briefly. (for
example while responding to Q24, if cardiac arrest was an adverse reaction, circle ‘Other’ and write
‘Cardiac arrest’)
5. If any data point is missing, please write ‘missing’ in the respective box.
6. Please address all queries/conflicts/ambiguities/suggestions/ideas about data abstraction to the
principal investigator via e-mail([email protected]) or text(0432650840).
Specific:
A. Demographic details:
1. Please enter the patient study number in a 4-digit format (for example the study number for
the first patient chart you abstract data from would be 0001/0101/0201 and so on).
2. Please enter the patient’s QCC ID in a 8-digit format (for example 07723456).
3. Please enter the patient’s date of retrieval in dd/mm/yyyy format (for example 01/01/2016).
4. Please enter patient’s age in years in a three-digit format (for example 018).
5. Please circle patient’s gender.
6. Please enter patients weight in kilograms in a three-digit format (for example 099).
B. Sedation details:
1. For Questions 7 and 8, please specify the names of drugs used specifically for sedation (so
opiates do not count even if they have sedating properties), routes of administration
(IM/IV/PO/IO/SC/IN), total dose in milligrams (if patient is receiving a drug infusion, please
document the calculated total dose of the drug) and, for post retrieval team arrival sedatives
only, time of administration in hh:mm format. For infusions please document the start and end
times of the infusion. ‘Pre-retrieval’ in Question 1 means prior to receiving handover from the
referring facility. ‘During retrieval’ in Question 2 means the duration between receiving patient
handover from the referring facility to giving patient handover to the receiving facility (including
any road transfers to and from the airstrip/airport in case of fixed wing retrieval).
2. For Questions 9 and 10, please document the time in hh:mm format.
3. For Question 11, please document the total duration of the return retrieval leg(s) from "Arrive
at patient” time to "Arrive receiving facility” time in minutes (for example 099 minutes). This
would include any road legs that precede or follow an air leg.
4. For Question 13 and 14, please document the name of the facilities clearly (for example,
Townsville hospital, Kowanyama PHCC, etcetera)
5. For Question 15, Psychosis not otherwise specified means any psychotic symptoms in a patient
without a diagnosis of schizophrenia; Drug intoxication means under the influence of any
psychostimulant drug.
6. For Question 18, Chronic respiratory disease means any obstructive or restrictive lung disease
resulting in persistent functional impairment including COPD, Asthma, IPF, etc. Chronic heart
disease means any heart disease resulting in persistent functional impairment including chronic
heart failure, cardiomyopathy, etc.

7. For questions relating to potential adverse effects of ketamine ie. Questions 19, 21, 22 and 24 if
these findings were present BEFORE ketamine had been administered please indicate so and
the time that they were first noted.
8. For Question 25, please use free-text to enter any intervention in the corresponding box
underneath the adverse reaction (for example BVM ventilation under laryngospasm).
9. For Question 27, please circle the response and write the time of intubation in hh:mm format.
Guidelines for coding responses during data entry into SPSS:
1. For Question 5, Male = 1, Female = 2
2. For all questions with yes/no response, Yes =1, No =2
3. For Question 7 & 8,
a. Ketamine =1, Droperidol =2, Midazolam = 3, Haloperidol = 4, Diazepam = 5, Olanzapine = 6, Any
other drug=7
b. IV = 1, IM =2, PO=3, IO =4, SC =5, IN=6
4. For Question 12, FW =1, RW=2
5. For Question 13 and 14, use the table at the end of this document to assign codes
6. For Question 15, Schizophrenia=1, Psychosis not otherwise specified = 2, Drug intoxication =3,
Other =4
7. For Question 18, Chronic respiratory disease =1, Obesity =2, Chronic kidney disease =3, Chronic
liver disease =4, Chronic heart disease =5, Other =6
8. For Question 20, None =1, Fluids =2, Inotropes=3, Anti-hypertensives =4, Other =5
9. For Question 23, Airway manoeuvre =1, Airway device = 2, Supplemental oxygen =3, None =4
10. For Question 24, Nausea/Vomiting =1, increased secretions =2, Emergence phenomena =3, Apnoea
=4, Laryngospasm =5, Other =6
11. For Question 27, Pre-retrieval =1, During retrieval =2
12. For Question 28, Airway protection/Respiratory depression =1, Persistent ABD =2, Other =3
13. For Questions with numerical responses, missing values= 9999.For all other questions, missing
values = 999
