Directions: Shade in, highlight or color the area of the brain affected by the given situation.
1. Julia had a brain infection and a fever at age 2. By age 10 she began having spells of terrible fright; they are sometimes
accompanied by aggression.
2. John received a head injury in a car accident several months ago. For a while he had motor dysfunction, but most of this
is now abated, except for the mild paralysis of his left hand.
3. Astronaut Edwin Aldrin reported seeing mysterious flashes of light during the Apollo 11 mission, the visual display
apparently resulted from high energy particles passing through these portions of the brain.
4. After apparent overdose of drugs and alcohol Karen Quinlan stop breathing for several minutes, incurring extensive
brain damage. Loss must have been severe in the arousal area of the brain, for she remained in a prolonged coma.
(Seven years before her parents ‘won” a court case for her right to die.)
5. Mary has epileptic seizures. The neurologist was given a clue as to the lesion’s location when Mary reported that the
seizures are usually preceded by an “aura” which involves the sensation of something touching her right leg. Where is
her epileptic “focus” likely to be?
6. Harry, a 33 year old executive, suffered from a stroke that left him without the ability to speak. The stroke probably cut
the blood supply to this area
7. Jason had a rare and severe form of epilepsy that could not be controlled with medication. Surgery stopped the
seizures but seemed to have little effect on his everyday thinking, talking and acting. However, in a laboratory he is
unable to name common objects that were hidden from view but placed in his left hand.
8. During an operation for the removal of a brain scar the surgeon stimulated the brain with an electrode. The patient
reported that she heard music.
9. Anoxia (lack of oxygen) during birth left Kevin rather uncoordinated. His movements are jerky rather than smooth.
