TheUnitedStatesisexperiencingasignificantnursingshortagethatisexpectedtocontinuewellintothefuture. Theincreaseddemandfornursesprojectedinthecomingyearscoupledwiththeagingofthenursingworkforce willonlyexacerbatethisshortage.Forfivedecades,theTitleVIIINursingWorkforceDevelopmentProgramshave helpedbuildthesupplyanddistributionofqualifiednursesneededinallhealthcaresettings.TheTitleVIII programsbolsternursingeducationatalllevels,fromentry-levelpreparationthroughgraduatestudy,and providesupportforinstitutionsthateducatenursesforpracticeinruralandmedicallyunderservedcommunities. ONSisaprofessionalorganizationofover39,000registerednursesandotherhealthcareprovidersdedicatedto excellenceinpatientcare,education,research,andadministrationinoncologynursing.Werepresentthehealth professionalsinvolvedintheadministrationandmonitoringofchemotherapyandmanagingtheassociatedside effectscancerpatientsmayexperience.Thegrowingdemandforcancercare,frompreventiontopalliativecare, requiresoncologynursestoplayapivotalandincreasinglyimportantroleindeliveringhighquality,safe,effective andefficienthealthcaretopeopleaffectedby,oratriskfor,cancer. Oncologynursesrepresentavitalcomponentofqualitycancertreatmentacrossthespectrumofcare;however, theshrinkingnurseworkforceultimatelywillresultinfewernurseswhochooseoncologynursingasacareer,stay inoncologynursing,andbecomecertifiedinoncologynursing.Thequalityofcancercaremaybenegatively impactedasaresult. TitleVIIINursingWorkforceDevelopmentProgramsareadirectinvestmentinthenursingworkforce,patient well-being,andthesustainabilityofournation’shealthcaresystem,andONSthanksyouforyoursupportofthe nursingprofession.WewouldbehappytodiscusswaysinwhichONSmaybeofassistanceinthisendeavor,and wouldencourageyoutocontactAlecStone,MA,MPA,ONSDirectorofHealthPolicy,[email protected].
