THE CALL TO WORSHIP
(Psalm 27:1,4,5)
[ Pastor / CONGREGATION ]
The Lord is my light and my salvation!
WHOM SHALL I FEAR?
The Lord is the strength of my life!
OF WHOM SHALL I BE AFRAID?
One thing I ask of the Lord;
THIS IS WHAT I SEEK:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE;
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord,
AND TO SEEK HIM IN HIS TEMPLE.
For in the day of trouble
HE WILL KEEP ME SAFE
IN HIS DWELLING
He will hide me
in the shelter of His tabernacle
AND SET ME HIGH UPON A ROCK.
**THE OPENING HYMN

‘AND CAN IT BE THAT I
SHOULD GAIN’
(Verses 1,3,5)
And can it be that I should gain
(1)
an interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that You, my God, should die for me.
Amazing love! How can it be
that You, my God, would die for me.
He left His Father’s throne above,
(2)
So free, so infinite His grace
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race
Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me.
Amazing love! How can it be
that You, my God, would die for me.
No condemnation now I dread;
(3)
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Lord,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the-eternal throne,
And claim the crown,
through Christ my own.
Amazing love! How can it be
that You, my God, would die for me.
SILENT PRAYERS OF
THANKSGIVING AND CONFESSION
THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Nehemiah 9:17b
You are a forgiving God, gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger and
abounding in love.
THE SONG OF RESPONSE
#739
WHY DO I SING
ABOUT JESUS?
(1)
Deep in my heart there’s a gladness;
Jesus has saved me from sin!
Praise to His name, what a Savior!
Cleansing without and within!
Why do I sing about Jesus?
Why is He precious to me?
He is my Lord and my Savior,
Dying, He set me free!
(2)
Only a glimpse of His goodness,
That was sufficient for me.
Only one look at the Savior;
Then was my spirit set free.
Why do I sing about Jesus?
Why is He precious to me?
He is my Lord and my Savior,
Dying, He set me free!
(3)
He is the fairest of fair ones;
He is the Lily, the Rose.
Rivers of mercy surround Him;
Grace, love and pity He shows.
Why do I sing about Jesus?
Why is He precious to me?
He is my Lord and my Savior,
Dying, He set me free!

THE HOLY SCRIPTURE
Matthew 20:1-16
Read by Ron VanDyke
For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner
who went out early in the morning to hire men to
work in his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a
denarius for the day and then sent them into his
vineyard. About the third hour the landowner
went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, “You also go
and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you
whatever is right.” So they went.
Then the landowner went out again about the
sixth hour, and the ninth hour and did the same
thing. About the eleventh hour he went out and
found still others standing around in the
marketplace. He asked them, “Why have you
been standing here all day long doing nothing?”
“Because no one has hired us,” they answered.
Then the landowner said to them, “You also go
and work in my vineyard.”
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard
said to his foreman, “Call the workers and pay
them their wages, beginning with the last ones
hired and going on to the first ones hired.”
The workers who were hired about the eleventh
hour came first and each received a denarius. So
when those came who were hired first, they
expected to receive more. But each one of them
also received a denarius. When they received
their wage of one denarius, they began to
grumble against the landowner: “These men who
were hired last worked only one hour and you
have made them equal to us who have borne the
burden of the work and the heat of the day.” But
the landowner answered one of them, “Friend, I
am not being unfair to you. Didn’t you agree to
work for a denarius? Take your pay and go.
I want to give the man who was hired last the
same as I gave you. Don’t I have the right to do
what I want with my own money? Or are you
envious because I am generous?”
SO THE LAST WILL BE FIRST,
AND THE FIRST WILL BE LAST.
THE SONG OF PREPARATION
#564
(1)
I am weak but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I'll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
(2)
Thro' this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord,
None but Thee.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
(3)
When my feeble life is o'er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o'er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
THE SERMON
THE GREAT REVERSAL:
THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST
Matthew 20:1-16
Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein
Please see the Sermon Outline
The LANDOWNER
symbolizes GOD
The WORKERS
symbolizes US
The VINEYARD
symbolizes wherever it is that
God has called us to serve Him
THE JEWISH WORK DAY: 6AM TO 6PM
The Landowner instructed his foreman
to have all the workers line up for their pay
FIRST: Those hired LAST at 5:00 PM
NEXT: Those hired at
3:00 PM, 12 NOON, 9:00 AM
LAST: Those who were hired FIRST
early that morning – 6:00 AM
THE FIRST POINT
God is
absolutely and totally
SOVEREIGN
and supreme in all things.
ISAIAH 55:8-9
“My thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways My ways,”
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the
earth, so are My ways higher than
your ways and My thoughts than
your thoughts.”
THE SECOND POINT
God has chosen to give us
some measure of CHOICE
for which we are
held accountable
and responsible.
THE THIRD POINT
God is much more
concerned about our
INNER ATTITUDES
and HEART-FELT MOTIVES
than in the “volume”
we accomplish.
Jesus tells us in this parable
about a sovereign God who
OWES US NOTHING,
and yet Who,
at the same time,
CHOOSES
to give us that which we
do not deserve.
[Grace]
THE FOURTH POINT
God’s ‘Vineyard’ is located
wherever it is it that God
has called each one of us to
do His work.
Location! Location! Location!
THE LAST WILL BE FIRST,
AND THE FIRST WILL BE LAST.
We could call this
THE GREAT REVERSAL
God’s eternal value system is far
different than our
temporal value system.
(See 1 Samuel 16:7)
The Pastoral Prayer
and
The Lord’s Prayer
OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN,
HALLOWED BE THY NAME.
THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE,
ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD,
AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS;
AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION
BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM,
AND THE POWER, AND THE GLORY FOREVER
AMEN.

‘He Keeps Me Singing’
There’s within my heart a melody,
Jesus whispers sweet and low,
“Fear not, I am with thee, Peace Be Still,”
In all of life’s ebb and flow.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Sweetest name I know.
Fills my every longing,
Keeps me singing as I go.
All my life was wrecked by sin and strife,
Discord filled my heart with pain.
Jesus swept across the broken strings,
Stirred the slumbering chords again.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Sweetest name I know.
Fills my every longing,
Keeps me singing as I go.
Feasting on the riches of His grace,
Resting ‘neath His sheltering wing,
Always looking on His smiling face,
That is why I shout and sing.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Sweetest name I know.
Fills my every longing,
Keeps me singing as I go.
Soon He’s coming back to welcome me
Far beyond the starry sky;
I shall wing my flight to worlds unknown,
I shall reign with Him on high.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
Sweetest name I know.
Fills my every longing,
Keeps me singing as I go.
THE PASTORAL BENEDICTION
