Founded in 1989, German-based UROTECH GmbH is
specialized in the development and manufacturing of
disposable instrumentation for a wide field of modern
urology applications. Within our vast product portfolio
we offer, amongst others, Ureteral Stents, Nephrostomy
Catheters, Puncture & Exchange Sets, Balloon Catheters,
Haematuria/Tamponade Catheters, Suprapubic Bladder
Puncture Sets / Exchange Sets, Stone Extractors and Ureteral Catheters.
Most Urotech products are being manufactured inhouse. The close cooperation between R&D and production enables us to individually and quickly react to
customer needs. We constantly develop several new
and innovative products in close co-operation with our
Research & Development engineers and key reference
doctors. Our production facilities are modern, with upto-date technology clean-room facilities fulfilling all international standards and all legal requirements.
One of our great strengths is the treatment of ureteral
stents and nephrostomy catheters with Phosphorylcholine. This exclusive UROTECH treatment provides various
advantages such as increased indwelling times, reduced
incrustation and a reduced bacteria colonization on the
stent/catheter surfaces. Altogether PC-treatments will increase the indwelling performance of the devices and
reduce the risk of clinically significant complications.

Phosphorylcholine:
modern technology
for high requirements
Phosphorylcholine is a biocompatible and durable sealing of the inner and outer
surface of implants to prevent
biofilm formation and subsequent
encrustation. It is successfully used
not only in urology but also in other medical fields (e.g.
coronary stents, contact lenses).
Since 1997 UROTECH is successfully using Phosphorylcholine-treatment on urological devices. PC lowers proven the risk of encrustations and infections, which results
in prolonging the indwelling time of ureteral stents and
nephrostomy catheters.
Below, we would like to show the effectiveness of the
PC-treatment and its advantage.

The effect
Phosphorylcholine is according to the described effectiveness highly suitable for the application in the urology.
The water molecules on the surface of the implants stop
the binding of other molecules and materials on the PCsurface and reduce at the same time the coefficient of
friction, which results in a better implantation behaviour.
Even a short time after implantation a biofilm formation
on the surface of untreated catheters is observed, containing multiple microorganism and extracellular matrices.
The camouflageeffect of PCtreated stents
This biofilm can be seen as a permanent reservoir of
bacteria, protected against antibiotic therapy and maintaining a catheter associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Most of these microorganism are forming urea splitting enzymes (urease) resulting in an increasing ph-level
of urine and in the biofilm. If the ph-level exceed the
neutral point (ph=7), different soluted molecules precipitate and crystallise on the surface of the implant. An
encrustation is formed, the inner lumen of the catheter
narrows and the implant is not functioning.
Due to the water film on its surface Phosphorylcholine
reduces the adhesion of bacteria and proteins, resulting
in a decreased biofilm and therefore significantly lowers
encrustation.

For the wide field of nephrostomy, UROTECH
offers a large range of catheters and sets tailor-made
for all current operating techniques such as direct
nephrostomy, 2-step or standard percutaneous
nephrostomy. Our range of catheters includes balloon

minimize infection and incrustation.

Among various technologies to extract stones from
the urinary tract, stone baskets remain a highly effective
and sensitive tool for urologists. UROTECH provides
a wide range of Nitinol stone retrieval baskets
including helical-, straight- and filiform-wire-baskets

Suprapubic bladder puncture- and exchange-sets
are available for standard and paediatric sizes. We offer
balloon – as well as pigtail shaped silicone catheters
