Introductions/Announcements:
Adam Jones, intern with Englert will be attending and will represent the Englert as an alternate. Englert
has Fall calendar information to share and announced its Masque Ball.
Crandall from Bidwell stated that the City of Des Moines signed off on various improvements to the
facility that will prevent further flooding. The basement of the facility should take another month to
repair.
Volpalka shared that tomorrow is Nat’l LGBT Community Center Awareness Day.
Thornburg from WRAC advertised the IWMF (Prairie Voices), which WRAC sponsors.
Hougen announced the AFP Eastern Iowa event at Cedar Ridge Winery, from 4:30-6:30.
Raffle Drawing: moved to the end of the meeting. Winners: Grand Prize $500, Greg Spragle, Coralville,
2nd Prize $250, Eric and Amy Gjerde (no city given), 3rd Prize $100, Ellen Fisher, Cedar Rapids
Minutes from Previous Meeting: McBeth will send. May not have been sent out with the Addendum
Financial Report: Dillon discussed the perceived difference between the payout and the actual balance.
She may have identified areas of discrepancy and will bring this up with the accountant. Payout checks
were mailed several days ago. Motion to accept and file Financial Report. M/S/Accepted
Campaigns:
UI warmup letters are ready to mail. Hougen was reminded to give board members the opportunity to
help with stuffing envelopes, etc., as this is a major point-earning opportunity for board members.
DM City employees. There is a concern that the number of employees is being underreported to IS and
that materials are not going directly to employees. There is the same concern with Polk County. Signs
and CI members will follow up.
DM Schools remain uncommunicative. Signs has offered to help CI.
City of Marion and Linn Mar. A letter introducing IS, along with brochure and pledge card are being
prepared.
Linn County. May not come onboard this year, but it looks good for next year.
Fundraising:
Sept. 18 Silent Auction, IWMF. Items may be taken to WRAC or IS office.
Oct. 1 Coffeehouse Fundraiser, Beadology. This is UI Homecoming date. McBeth will contact
proprietor about this and follow up with information to the Board.
Oct. 31 Fundraiser at Devotay 5:30-9pm with percentage of sales to IS. Please spread the word.
Volpalka noticed that One Iowa is listed in the advertising blurb for the Devotay event on the IS webpage.
McBeth will notify Ver Schuure.
There will be a fundraiser at Thai Flavors in Iowa City sometime in November.
Old Business:
Committees. Signs continues to try to flesh these out. Steele and McBeth have been in contact regarding
potentially splitting Membership Chair duties.
Meeting Schedule. Motion. Cancel October board meeting with the understanding that smaller
committee meetings will take place. M/S/Accepted. 2 Nay votes.
Officer Terms & Transitioning. Crandall announced that he will be retiring from Bidwell effective end of
October. The board discussed the possibility of a social event. The timing of elections was discussed
based on what other Shares organizations do. It was determined that there was no need to change at this
time, as it would have an immediate effect on the point system, campaigns, and membership recruitment.
New Business:
Membership Dues Structure. Interest in doing this to retain membership, better address the problem of
member organizations not making enough in pledges to cover membership dues and fundraising
obligation. Discussion of what a graduated system would be. Other Shares organizations do this. More
investigation and discussion will have to take place.
Other. Signs met with Prairie Woods for potential membership. In the course of this meeting made a
Rockwell Collins contact on the committee for distributing workplace campaign pledges to various
organizations. Rockwell could be interested in adding IS to their campaign.
Action items: McBeth will send minutes from August for future vote. Signs and CI members will follow
up on discrepancies in City of DM and Polk County campaigns. CI and Signs will continue to work on
DM Schools. McBeth will contact proprietor regarding date of Coffeehouse fundraiser. McBeth will
notify Ver Schuure regarding website error. In October, campaign committees will meet in lieu of BOD
meeting.
Meeting Adjourned. 7:30pm
