On the first day of the summit, which brought together the executives of various industries including cement, automotive, energy, iron and steel, and chemicals, the session entitled “Carbon Management and Carbon Industry” was moderated by Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu. Representing the energy industry, Sinan Ak, General Manager of Zorlu Enerji, presented a speech at the session, highlighting the importance Vestel places on renewable energy resources and technological investments in order to meet the demand that increases in parallel with development, as well as to maintain environmental sustainability, adding: “Decisions taken today will determine the future. We cannot avoid the impact of climate change; those who cannot recognize this will be left behind the times.” Ak further said: “We will continue to invest in projects that promote security of supply and sustainability in energy with our resource diversity and our competence in creating innovative solutions. Investment in solar energy is becoming prominent lately in Turkey's renewable energy strategy. Integrated systems are being developed all around the world thanks to smart solution technologies. We take a close interest in solar power technologies and would like to establish new partnerships.” After the session, activists and organizations that are successful in carbon management received their Low Carbon Heroes Awards from the Sustainable Consumption and Production Association (SPCA) at the award ceremony. Zorlu Enerji developed its battle against climate change in the framework of three main areas of responsibility, and defines these practices as follows: offering sufficient, high quality, low-cost energy to consumers in a consistent and environmentally friendly way; prioritizing investments in advanced technologies and energy efficiency; joining voluntary initiatives for an effective management of risks and opportunities in combating climate change. Ak made the following assessment about the reward: “As one of the important actors in the energy industry, which is considered as primary sector responsible for climate change, we are happy to be a source of inspiration to the private sector, particularly the energy industry, through sharing our activities of measuring, monitoring and assessing our carbon footprint with the national and international public in a transparent way.”
