The Little Match Girl Musical receives “Best Play for Children in 2015” Award
Zorlu Children’s Theater, started as a social responsibility project by the Mehmet Zorlu
Foundation to introduce children to stage theater and popularize it among youngsters,
received its fourth award. The Little Match Girl Musical was chosen the “Best Play for Children
in 2015” by the Traveller’s Club of Turkey. With the inclusion of this new award for The Little
Match Girl Musical, Zorlu Children’s Theater has won a total of 11 awards...
Zorlu Children’s Theater, which introduced 600.000 kids across Turkey to theater since 2003 with close
to a thousand plays and has received award after award, continues to meet with children in its 13th year.
The Little Match Girl Musical, which will be performed until the end of May, will be staged at
Kadıköy Halk Eğitim Merkezi on 23-24-25th of January and in Zorlu Performing Arts Center on
31st of January.

“The Little Match Girl Musical” was adapted by Drama Professor and Head of the Department of
Performing Arts at Anadolu University State Conservatory, Hasan Erkek, from the famous Hans
Christian Andersen story of the same name. The play which is directed also by Hasan Erkek, is intended
for audiences of ages 5 and above.
The Little Match Girl Musical, which received the “Best Children’s Play Award” at the İsmet Kuntay
Theatre Awards, “Musical Production Award” at Direklerarası Theater Audience Association Awards
in the 2013-2014 season and “Best Production Award” by Tiyatro Gazetesi in 2014, increased its
number of awards to four.
The musical, which is about a girl who sells matches and sings with her accordion in the streets, tells
youngsters about the joy of life, friendship and cooperation through a theatrical setting. It presents a
combination of the art forms of music, dance, mime, juggling and painting as well as raising awareness
about street children. Zorlu Children’s Theater offers a different adaptation for audiences by ending The
Little Match Girl Musical on a happy note contrary to the original work.
About Zorlu Children’s Theater:
Zorlu Children’s Theater was founded in 2003 as one of many projects by Mehmet Zorlu Foundation
aimed at supporting the development of children and youth in a variety of fields such as culture, arts and
sports. Zorlu Children’s Theater have so far put on the following plays for children: the Heart of Music,
the Nose, Karagöz, Witches and the Fakir, Shame of the Tin Soldier, Kitchen of Cats and Mice, Wizard
of Oz, Town Musicians of Bremen, the Ugly Duckling Musical, the Frog Prince, the Little Match Girl
Musical and Frozen.
Zorlu Children’s Theater received 11 different awards for the Ugly Duckling Musical, the Little Match
Girl, the Frog Prince Play, and the Wizard of Oz. In 2013, Wizard of Oz received the “Best Production
Award” from International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ) and Sahne
Dergisi at the Children and Young People's Theatre Awards. The Frog Prince Play received awards for
“Best Actress” and “Best Actor” at the Children and Young People Theatre Awards hosted ASSISTEJ
and Sahne Dergisi.At the 12th Direklerarası Audience Awards, the Ugly Duckling Musical received the
Writer’s Award and the Musician’s Award in the “Children’s Plays” category and Zorlu Children’s
Theater also received the “Special Award” for its contribution in children’s theater. The musical won the
“Best Performance Award” at the International Animation Theater Festival in Romania. Zorlu Children’s
Theater also received the “Best Children’s Play Award” at the 39th İsmet Kuntay Theatre Awards,
“Musical Production Award” at Direklerarası Theater Audience Association Awards in the 2013-2014
season and “Best Production Award” by Tiyatro Gazetesi in 2014. It was chosen as the “Best Play
for Children in 2015” by the Traveller’s Club of Turkey.
