Bursaries for financial market professionals
Bursaries are available to students who want to become financial market professionals.
Unisa signed an agreement with IMARA (an investment banking and asset management
group), and the South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM) to assist financially
disadvantaged students to do the three modules they need for the Registered Persons
Examination (RPE).
The RPE is intended to provide an introduction to the financial markets for persons wishing
to become financial market practitioners. It is also ideal for individuals in other spheres of life
who wish to obtain background knowledge to improve their career prospects.
IMARA will pay the cost of the three modules (The Regulation and Ethics of the South
African Financial Markets, Introduction to the Financial Markets, and The Equity Market) for
up to eighty Unisa students per year. Students write the exams wit
The application deadline for the first semester is 30 March. The second opportunity to apply
will be open from 1 July to 30 September. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as
possible to allow them sufficient time to prepare for the exams. Once students are registered
with the SAIFM, they will be given a period of 12 months to write the exams.
Students must meet the following criteria to be considered for a bursary:
 They must be financially disadvantaged (as determined by a means test)
 They must have a proven academic record
 They must reside in South Africa, SADC countries and countries in Sub-Sahara Africa
 They must be senior students who have passed at least 200 credits towards their
intended degree and
 Must major in Financial Management, Investment Management, Risk Management,
Banking, Economics and/or Decision Science.

assist needy Unisa students financially to become financial market professionals. IMARA will
provide funds to Unisa to purchase 3 modules;

per year for up to 80 students.
The RPE is intended to provide an introduction to the financial markets for persons wishing
to become financial market practitioners and is also ideal for individuals in other spheres of
life who wish to obtain background knowledge to enhance their career prospects.
Application is open from 1st January to 30th March, and from 1st July to 30th September.
Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for the

The Unisa/SAIFM/Imara bursary is an opportunity to students who are interested to write the
South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM) Registered Persons Examination (RPE).
The successful completion of the RPE will boost your chances of employability on completion
of your BCom degree. The RPE: Specialisation in Equity Market consists of the following 3
modules.




The Equity Market
