Manager of Energy and Environmental Sustainability
Core Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Secretary Treasurer, the Manager will be responsible for the energy management and
resource conservation and environmental sustainability strategies of the school district, and the
implementation and adoption of sustainable energy practices and consumption in accordance and
collaboration with BC Hydro’s Power Smart Program. With full oversight of the energy management and
resource conservation portfolio, your responsibilities include: strategy and business case development,
financial management, project planning and implementation, and energy assessment.
As an approved BC Hydro Power Smart Partner, your goal is to ensure energy consumption and
conservation targets are met, if not exceeded. You are also responsible for overseeing initiatives to
promote energy conservation and sustainable energy practices across the district. In addition, in
conjunction with the Facilities staff, you will also provide important input and guidance into the
sustainability strategies with respect to the execution of major capital projects within the district.
Specific Responsibilities:
Organizational Change Management






Create the ideal organizational culture necessary to achieve the goals of an energy
management, resource conservation and environmental sustainability plan.
Complete an organizational impact analysis and define a change management strategy and
governance model for energy management, resource conservation and environmental
sustainability.
Develop change management plans and execute the activities, which include preparing the
organization for change, managing the change and reinforcing the change.
Lead the District’s effort to build a coalition of change agents who can genuinely support,
communicate, champion, and sustain the change before, during and after the “green” or energy,
management, resource conservation and environmental sustainability initiatives.
Conduct and participate in workshops related to change management.
Keep the District Management Team current on project schedules and potential impact to the
organization
Resource and Waste Management


Conduct an audit, review and evaluation of the current state of the District’s resource, waste
management and procurement practices with respect to energy management, resource
conservation and environmental sustainability.
Recommend a Resource, Waste Management and Procurement plan to address gaps and steps
required to achieve agreed upon energy management, resource conservation and sustainability
goals.
Energy and Partnership Management






Work closely with the BC Hydro’s Power Smart requirements and ensure that the district is
meeting or exceeding these expectations.
Update data and prepare reports prescribed by BC Hydro’s online and paper-based reporting
requirements.
Maintain the relationships with BC Hydro ensuring expectations are met and that issues are
proactively addressed.
Create and present quarterly reports to various groups and committees including BC Hydro and
the Board of School Trustees;
Coordinate efforts with other staff and consultants in developing and integrating an Energy
Management Plan for the school district within the organization’s framework and policies;
Assist the district to meet or exceed annual kilowatt-hour savings targets for the school district
as identified in partnership with BC Hydro;
Technical Design Standards




Work with facilities managers, industry trades and relevant stakeholders in leading the
development of efficient energy management and resource conservation standards
Promote, develop and manage energy and resource conservation projects and monitor their
ongoing effectiveness;
Research and participate in the selection of energy and resource conservation efficient
technologies for building renovations and new construction projects;
Oversee building energy use audits of electrical and mechanical systems and prioritize
initiatives;
Strategic Planning and Reporting






Conceptualize strategies and guide team to conduct applied research/evaluation studies related
to energy management, resource conservation, environmental sustainability practices and
“green” initiatives.
Develop goals, strategies and detailed plans for reducing consumption of all consumable utilities
including electricity, gas and water in existing facilities
Evaluate, recommend and implement “best practices” as it relates to process, and tools
necessary to support department and board objectives.
Maintain detailed records, track usage, develop appropriate benchmarks, key performance
indicators and prepare annual budgets for the various utilities;
Co-chair the proposed staff energy conservation committee
Keep abreast of latest related industry developments and legislation in your area of expertise
Educational and Awareness



Lead the creation of awareness campaigns promoting energy management, resource
conservation and environmental sustainability objectives
Act as the District’s liaison to outside agencies to manage and report on greenhouse gas and
carbon footprint reduction strategies
Work with others to develop and implement student and staff awareness training on best
energy management, resource conservation and environmental sustainability practices.




Liaise with school district staff to ensure the successful integration of energy and resource
conservation equipment and systems in new buildings and major upgrades;
Produce effective communications updates for internal and external audiences that highlight
the District’s accomplishments towards energy and resource conservation;
Develop and coordinate energy and resource conservation awareness activities within the
District through various internal groups and external agencies;
Provide support to curriculum based programs through liaison with the District’s Sustainability
Coordinator and other staff as part of the District’s environmental sustainability team.
Grants and Funding Opportunities

Research and submit applications for available grants and incentive funding from BC Hydro and
other non-governmental and governmental agencies for energy management, resource
conservation and environmental sustainability initiatives;
