Call for Papers: Extension
RATIONAL
Entering the post-genomics epoch a new challenging mission is posted: to bring innovative biomedical research findings
directly to the clinics and the bedside of patients. The mission could be accomplished by intersecting the clinical, biological
and information sciences. An enterprise being inspired by the vision of genomic and personalised medicine, targeting the
in-silico biology domain, and enabled by the transition to interdisciplinary principles and endeavours. A transition guided by
the "-omics" revolution as realised by advances in transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, physiomics and
nanomedicine. The primary item in the respective agenda is translational research with Biomedical Informatics (BMI) in the
centre of the scene, called to provide the enabling technology and infrastructure.
AIMS &
SCOPE
BMIINT liaisons the clinical, biology and informatics field, and aims to provide a stand for the presentation of advances at
the conjunction of in-between components and procedures. It takes an interdisciplinary perspective and focuses on theory,
methods, techniques, tools, systems and services which support integration, management and intelligent analysis of
respective bio-related information and data sources. Emphasis is placed on the re-positioning of methods and techniques
from other domains of application into thε ΒΜΙΙΝΤ frontier. We envision the workshop as a FORUM for the cultivation of
ideas and research results. A round-table discussion will conclude the workshop with the aim to 'set the scene' and
integrate workshop papers presentation. Minutes will be recorded and published on the Web and in a Special Issue, to be
decided - in cooperation with a major AI or BMI scientific Journal (round-table details will be announced).
OBJECTIVES
In the multidisciplinary environment of Biomedical Informatics, genomic medicine and clinical decision making calls for the
integration of complex clinico-genomic data and information resources. A paradigm shift that extends classical means and
capability. Genomic and genetic information is part of patient profile and may suggest predisposition of the individual
toward disease manifestation (diagnosis and prognosis). On the other hand, analysis on the -omics levels extends
traditional clinical data models. Thus medical decision making extends in two sides: on the one side to include genotypes,
and on the other to include (when appropriate) omics findings - the phenotypes.
Yet integration is not easy simply because at both ends (genotype, phenotype) the amount of available data is immense,
and complexity of processes is high. At the up-stream (or research) level scientists may be interested in the investigation
between genotype-phenotype information to form associations and patterns of disease and susceptibility indices. At the
middle-stream (industrial level) technology and service providers are interested in embedding research advances into
concrete products and services via intelligent devices. Device impact is further enhanced by advances in the nano field, as
expressed by nanomaterials, nanomedicine and nanoinformatics. At the down-stream (clinical theatre) level healthcare
professionals (and patients as well) look forward to apply new technology on the vision of continuously improving social
welfare decision making.
TOPICS
The complex clinico-genomic environment is occupied by a set of problems that challenge the traditional and long-standing
coupling between medical decision making and Artificial Intelligence: How to cope with the huge amounts of
genomic/genetic bio-data produced by high-throughput (HTP) platforms? Here the call targets the utilisation, customization
and deployment of high-performing computational environments, i.e., Grid-enabling infrastructures; How to cope with
the heterogeneous nature of complex clinico-genomic data? Here the call targets the utilisation of semantic integration
technology and interoperable solutions as realised by standard information/data-models and ontologies, Web-Services and
Scientific Workflows; How to correlate the classical clinical profile of individuals (e.g., biochemical, histological, drugresponse etc) with their genetic and genomic background? Here he call targets data-mining and knowledge discover
algorithms, operations, systems, tools and services. In addition, research findings should be well-documented, indexed and
traceable. Here argumentation and recommendation systems present the key technology to realize. Contributions to the
workshop may be cast in the following indicative (not limiting) areas with a special emphasis on the crossroads with
intelligent approaches:

Ontologies and Terminologies in Biomedicine (metadata)

Semantic Biological Data Integration (information & data modelling)

Grids, Biomedical Web Services and Scientific Workflows

Knowledge Acquisition and Knowledge Discovery in Biomedical Research

Discovery of Biomarkers (tarnscriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic etc.)

Mining Molecular Pathways and Networks

Genotype-Phenotype Association Studies

Biomedical Literature Mining

DNA-Sequence analysis - Identification of DNA Functional Units

Modelling (in silico) and Simulation in Biomedical Research

Bio-Imaging and Bio-Sensing Applications

Nanotechnology for Personalized Medicine: Nanomedicine, Nanoinformatics

Biomedical Argumentation and Recommendation systems

Biomedical Computing Environments, Systems and Platforms
Case studies will be greatly appreciated. System demonstration can be arranged.
AUDIENCE &
SUPPORT
BMIINT is addressed to scientists and researchers interested in the diffusion of intelligent methods and techniques in the
changing clinico-genomic decision making cycle model. During the workshop it is planed that results from various European
R&D projects will be presented, e.g., ACGT, LOCCANDIA, ACTION-Grid, GEN2PHEN, and others.
