A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of the American Cancer Society.
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society was founded in 1913, and it is the largest
voluntary health organization in the world with more than two million volunteers across
the nation that are involved in waging the battle against cancer on every front; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based
voluntary health organization that is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health
problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer,
through research, education, advocacy, and service; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is the largest private source of funding
for scientists studying cancer, and only the federal government awards more grants for
cancer research; and in Kentucky alone, there are eleven recipients of American Cancer
Society research grants totaling more than $3.8 million; and
WHEREAS, by 2015, the American Cancer Society's goals are to save twice as
many lives through a fifty-percent reduction in age-adjusted mortality rates; to reduce
age-adjusted incidence rates by twenty-five percent; and to measurably improve the
quality of physical, psychological, social and spiritual life from the time of diagnosis and
for the balance of life of all cancer survivors; and
WHEREAS, 9,100 residents of the Commonwealth of Kentucky will die of cancer
this year;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky:
Section 1.
The Senate does hereby commend and applaud the American Cancer
Society for continuing the fight against cancer on every front. We thank the society for
the many contributions it has given to the citizens of this Commonwealth, and we wish
the American Cancer Society success in all future endeavors.
Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the American

Section 3.
The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this
