ENZA Before 1991, New Zealand apples and pears were marketed under the name ‘New Zealand’. However ‘New Zealand’ can be used by any exporter from this country, regardless of the quality of their product, and it cannot be registered as a fruit brand. So in 1991, the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing board introduced the brand “ENZA’ for its export pip-fruit. The letters don’t stand for any words - ENZA was chosen because it’s culturally acceptable, has a strong association with New Zealand and is short and snappy to fit neatly within the apple and pear logo. ENZA now markets New Zealand apples and pears to over 65 countries. Also grows apples in 12 countries. Key supplier of fresh produce to 22 of the world’s top 25 retailers. Owns the rights to new global varieties including JAZZ™and ENVY™ apples and ENZARed™, ENZAGold™ and Summerkiwi Kiwifruit™. From exporting almost 80 percent of the crop to the United Kingdom in 1948, today over 70 percent of our pip-fruit is exported to countries outside of Britain. More than 70 percent of ENZA pip-fruit is sold by offshore subsidiaries and joint ventures to retail operations and major wholesale distributors. By removing the middle person who acts as a distributor, ENZA ultimately improves returns to growers. ENZA merged with Turners & Growers in 2003 to create global growing and distribution network. Turners & Growers have three key offshore operations for the distribution of ENZA pip-fruit: • Delica Global – A sister company of ENZA in the Turners & Growers group, Delica Global specialises in procuring the finest produce from New Zealand and around the world for export into the Asia region. Based in Auckland, Delica Global has offices in Hastings, Melbourne, Lima, Los Angeles and Canada. • ENZAFRUIT Continent – A long established and fully-owned subsidiary, based in Belgium, dedicated to ENZA’s business in continental Europe. • Worldwide Fruit – 50 percent owned United Kingdom agents, specialising in pip-fruit distribution and marketing but also handling a range of other products including stone fruit, avocado, soft fruit and kiwifruit. • The Oppenheimer Group – U.S. subsidiary is 15 percent owned marketers of eight key product categories (pip-fruit, kiwifruit, grapes, citrus, stone fruit, mangoes, pineapple, and greenhouse product) throughout North America. TURNERS & GROWERS Sells approximately of $1 billion of fresh produce globally each year. There are 45 companies worldwide in the Turners & Growers Group including ENZA. It is New Zealand’s leading distributor, marketer and exporter of premium fresh produce. Turners & Growers are the largest corporate horticulture investor in New Zealand and the largest grower of new apple varieties, hothouse tomatoes and citrus.
