Green and Clean Cities Presented on the 7th Ethiopian Urban Forum By Gemedo Dale (Phd) May 2017 Gondar 1. Introduction • Ensuring energy, economic, and environmental security is critical 2. Ethiopian leadership in a time of climate risk • Ethiopia is among a few countries in Africa that have developed and implementing climate resilient green economy (CRGE). – Stopping climate change has become a priority – reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase resource efficiency Ethiopian leadership Cont… • According to Brahmbhatt and Bishop (Africa’s New Climate Economy: Economic Transformation and Social and Environmental Change), there is high need for Ethiopian leadership to address the following: – Increase agricultural yields by intensifying production and exploring “climate-smart” techniques. Ethiopian leadership Cont… – Diversify into high productivity manufacturing, particularly through sustainable production. – Encourage “compact, connected, and coordinated urban development.” – Meet rapidly growing energy needs through a wealth of clean energy resources. – “Keep working on the basics,” particularly gender equality and education access. 3. Sustainable Cities • Sustainable cities have cleaner air, less traffic congestion and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. 4. Role of Green Trees and Plants • Green trees and plants will prevent atmospheric damage, both on a global and on a local scale. • Climate change causes extreme heat and drought, alternated with excessive rainfall. – Trees and plants in a city can provide a cooling effect in case of a heat wave. Role of Green Trees Cont… –In the case of extreme rainfall, a planted soil will have a better water storage capacity than asphalt and concrete. –Public green places, like parks and gardens, contribute to a healthy urban climate. The new integrated Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy was launched by the European Commission on 15 October 2015 during a Ceremony in the European Parliament in Brussels. The three pillars of the strengthened Covenant - mitigation, adaptation, and secure, sustainable and affordable energy - were symbolically endorsed on this occasion. Thank You
