The sharp choice for
the sawmill industry
Blades that set the
standards for performance
and profitability
Bandsaws are the most widely used machines to cut
logs because their thin kerf results in high timber
yield, low amounts of sawdust, accurate cutting and
good processing economy. Nevertheless, even the
best bandsaws cannot compensate for poor blades.
That’s why you should choose Munkfors. Our highperformance blades give the excellent and consistent sawing results you need for saving costs involved
with cutting logs, bandsaw operation, manpower and
timber quality.
Minimum downtime
Running costs are enormous for sawmills, and the powerful forces generated during high-speed sawing make
the use of really sharp, resilient and wear-resistant
blades crucial. Sharp blades also reduce frictional heat,
which is one reason for blade failure. At Munkfors we
are well aware of these factors. That’s why we produce
superior blades that give sawmills minimum downtime
secured by reliable equipment to avoid losing a great
deal of money each minute machines lie idle.
Saving costs
Although a bandsaw blade, including its maintenance,
accounts for just 0.6% of sawmill running costs,
Munkfors products result in considerable cost-savings
in three main ways:
• Better utilization of raw materials in the form
of higher yields and better sawing accuracy and
surface finish;
• Improved production efficiency through longer running times, higher feed speeds and less maintenance;
• Higher operational reliability gained through
higher capacity.

Sawmill support
In addition to supplying high-performance blades to
sawmills, Munkfors provides long-term support by
taking full responsibility for blade lifecycles through
resharpening worn blades and evaluating them to
give feedback on bandsaw performance and sawing
conditions.
This is an important service designed to help you
minimize machine downtime and maximize cost-efficiency. We can satisfy your complete service needs for
the total range of tools used in your sawmill operations.
Flexible and responsive
Munkfors is a family-owned Swedish company that uses
world-renowned high-quality materials and manufacturing techniques. We have a very modern machine
park, including our own production equipment operated by highly skilled personnel.
In our efforts to stay ahead of the field, we maintain close relationships with customers and receive
constant feedback from them. This enables us to provide a flexible and responsive approach to satisfying
market needs and to gain the information needed for
continuous product improvement.

Dedicated support from blade
supply to sawing evaluation
The correct maintenance of bandsaw blades is essential
for cost-effective sawing. After blades become dull, it’s
not just a matter of resharpening and returning them.
We check all properties of a blade and restore them
to prime condition so that the blade performs just like
a new one. In addition, we evaluate how the blade
has been worn in order to suggest ways of improving
bandsaw or processing performance.

Every blade covered by a service agreement is registered to ensure that its performance history can be
readily updated or retrieved for examination.
Supplying new saw blades
The strip steel we use for Munkfors blades is supplied
to our specifications by leading companies in tooling and materials technology. The properties of each
steel type must satisfy exactly the demands of the
sawmill industry. Major requirements include high
strength, exceptional flatness and straightness, excellent weldability, tight tolerances and steel suitable for
stellite tipping.
Because our profile-grinding method allows the
use of harder steel than is possible with conventional
manufacturing methods, we can increase blade reliability and stability. Furthermore, by making sure that
resharpening is carried out in the best possible way
to maintain cutting efficiency, the blade can be used
very many hours after sharpening.
To facilitate tracking and logging, each blade bears
an individual number that cannot be erased by the
sawing action.
Maintaining used blades
We may carry out several steps to restore used
Munkfors blades to peak condition depending on the
wear and tear they have been subjected to. For example, tensioning, straightening, levelling, teeth setting,
sharpening and reswaging.
Our grinding service for resharpening tools is
among the most modern in the world to ensure that
returned blades continue to help you achieve your
processing objectives.
Blade evaluation
Inspecting a blade and evaluating the effect of sawing
give important indicators of bandsaw performance and
sawing conditions. For example, abnormal blade wear
may result from too high feed speed, incorrect blade
tension or worn bandsaw wheel bearings.
Such an evaluation can be used to advise you of
how to improve or rectify the bandsaw and/or processing performance.
Taking good care of you
Munkfors is big enough to take on a leading role in
the business arena, but small enough to maintain personal relationships in striving for customer satisfaction. You get personal attention in response to product enquiries and requests for technical advice. And
good logistics make certain that you can always depend on getting both products and backup within a
short timeframe.

Unique profile-grin
for better blades
Munkfors has both deep and broad expertise in the
design, manufacture and maintenance of wide bandsaw blades for the sawmill industry. This expertise has
been built up from over half a century of close cooperation with our customers and the development of
our own unique production technology. The high performance of our blades minimizes the damage that
results from harsh sawing conditions, including gullet
cracking and tooth breakage.
We also provide a complete support programme
for circular saws and other sawmill tools.
Four delivery forms
We supply wide bandsaw blades in four different
forms:
1. As part of a complete sawmill support package covering blade supply, maintenance and performance
evaluation.
2. Swaged or stellite-tipped welded blades that are
ready for use.
3. Toothed, welded and straightened blades ready
for grinding and swaging by the customer. The
welded joints are made in electronically controlled
machines.
4. Toothed bandsaw strips in coils packed in cases or
on pallets.

nding technology
Extop 2000
Our Extop 2000 grinding machine for high-performance bandsaw blades provides a number of benefits to ensure excellent production economy:
• No grinding burrs and no untempered martensite: the entire bandsaw tooth is ground in a single
step by a wide ceramic grinding wheel with very
effective water-cooling;
• Identical teeth: the grinding wheel is kept in uniform shape by a diamond dressing wheel after
each tooth is ground;
• Minimal risk of gullet cracks: this permits the use of
high blade tension to increase blade stability;
• Maintaining precision and feed speed: the feed speed
can be increased while maintaining a high level of
precision, or the precision can be improved while
maintaining the same feed speed;
• Wear-resistant teeth: prolongs teeth sharpness and
maintenance intervals.
Ultra-sharp teeth
Profile grinding produces identical ultra-sharp teeth of
uniform geometry. Munkfors was the first company
to develop this technique, which was revolutionary
when first introduced, and we have been refining it
ever since. As we manufacture our own special profile-grinding machines – now in their third generation
– none of our competitors have been able to copy our
patented technology or produce its superior results.
Unique profile-grinding technology
To produce the teeth of our top-quality blades we
use our own unique and patented profile-grinding
method that gives:
• Sharper blades
• Cleaner cutting
• Longer blade lifetime
• Minimum downtime
• Very little material waste
