UNIVERSITY OF TUZLA
FACULTY OF MINING, GEOLOGY AND
CIVIL ENGINEERING
STUDY PROGRAM- GEOLOGY
The University of Tuzla (established by the end of 1976) since its
foundation, has been continually growing and developing and now
consists 13 faculties.
Study program Geology belongs to the Faculty of Mining, Geology and
Civil Engineering,
Mining college was established into the Faculty as a part of University
of Sarajevo in 1960.
First post-graduate studies (Study of III level) in the area of Mine
geology began in1964. It was the first post graduate studies at Faculty
of Mining in the former Yugoslavia.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina there was no study of geology, geologist, at
that time, were educated at those postgraduate studies.
In 1973/1974 academic year study program Applied Geology was
formed and Faculty of Mining grown into the Faculty of Mining and
Geology.
So far at the study program Geology graduated 578 students; 78
master and 28 doctors of science in geology.
We are the only Geology study program at both sectors (public and
privat) in BiH.
Our faculty had three professor, members of the Academy of Science
and Art in BiH.
Within the past Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering has
not been involved in this kind of evaluation procedures, except the
internal evaluation at the level of University of Tuzla in 2009.
There are many weak points we are aware of, but also we are
committed to coming changes and feel like that most of us are capable
and willing to achieve strategic objectives of the study program.
STAFF AT THE GEOLOGY STUDY
Study program has the optimal number of teaching staff, but insufficient
number of assistants, administration staff and laboratory technicians
are employed.
On the geology study program, teachers who are employed at other
faculties of the University participate in the teaching process.
The learning process also involves experts from practice.
According to the teaching of scientific collaboration the University of
Tuzla and RGGF, signed agreements on cooperation with the
universities of Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad.

The regeneration of our faculty, is only possible if we make space for
the involvement of new young assistants.
The main problem in receiving new assistants is decision not to hire
new staff, appointed by the Government of Tuzla Canton due to the
recession. We expect a solution to this problem in the coming years,
with the improving of the situation in the country.
We need to hire several new employees in administration services, but
also modernize their operations in order to achieve greater efficiency.
Growth administration should monitor the growth of the study program,
particularly the development of programs.
Missing: officers in the administration department, 2-3 employees in
cleaning and maintenance of premises, maintenance workers
specialized laboratories and equipment and employees for purposes of
libraries.
FACILITIES
Classes at the Geological study program are conducted in the same
teaching rooms as the classes in other study programs of the faculty.
Which classrooms are used, depends on the number of students in some
study programs.
Space for administration, library, hall and toilets are shared by all study
programs.
Laboratories:
-Laboratory for Geomechanics (rock and soil mechanics);
-Laboratory for Natural Sciences;
-Laboratory of Mineralogy and Petrology

The library is temporary not available for the students, because of lack of
space. There is a large amount of monograph titles, books, and masters,
doctoral and graduate theses in the library archive.
Lack of facilities for teaching, facilities for teachers and assistants, as
well as space for laboratories.
Listed areas are lacking adequate office furniture, equipment, and
library reading rooms, adequate equipment and computer center
furniture, additional air conditioning of teaching space, adequate
equipment for hygiene, adequate tools for the maintenance of
laboratory equipment, computer and software system for student
service and communication for teachers, staff and students,
inadequate electrical and plumbing (the building is more than 60
years).
Lack of space for student services, toilets and bathrooms for workers,
specialized workshops for students; extracurricular activities, common
space for staff, space for archives, the space for storing samples, a
space for mineralogical-petrographic collection and storage space.
Analyzing the current state of student enrollment in all years and all
departments, and that we are planning to enroll next school year,
approximately the same number of students, it is obvious that the
employees whole faculty will re-encounter with the problem of teaching.
Also, if you consider the need for hiring new assistants and new
employees, it is obvious that it will be a shortage of office space. There
is a lack of the facilities and equipment for libraries and reading rooms,
as well as employees for purposes of reading rooms and libraries.
Further equipment procurement and improvement of working
conditions of staff and students are necessary, but it primarily depends
on available funds.
QUALITY
Vision Geology study program in Tuzla is to become a regional
college with recognizable image, which would support the
technological development of the Tuzla Canton and the
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the education of
competent, highly qualified staff, as well as providing design and
research service for the economy.
Mission of Geology study program is to provide students to study
at higher education institution that offers quality education,
lectures of famous professors and prominent industry experts
from country and region. Educating new generations we will be
able to respond to the challenges of tomorrow and support the
integration of BiH into the European Union.
The educational concept of Geology in Tuzla, is based on the
European academic standards, which defines the Geology study as the
educational and scientific - research institution, which has developed
the core scientific disciplines related to the field of natural sciences and
mathematics.
The Commission for the technical implementation of a survey,
conducted a survey for students of Mining, Geology and Civil
Engineering at the University of Tuzla, 08.06.2009.
Office for Quality on Faculty, conducted a questionnaire of students
for the first semester of 2010/2011 school year. The questionnaire
showed that a large number of students are satisfied with the
curriculum. In the future, after each semester anonymous
questionnaires will be carried out.
Study program adapts to the needs of users, and also harmonize with
the programs that are taught in other European countries and other
higher education institutions in the world. Periodic analyses of the
curriculum are conducted (every 4 years). Faculty will continue to work
on further improving the curriculum of study sections to suit the needs
of the economy, solving the problem to the satisfaction of students, the
economy and society.
Strengths and core strength for the realization of goals and further
development of the Geology Department are:
- Organization of scientific and professional meetings;
- A large number of scientific-research projects supported by the
FMO, and the applied projects and studies;
- Sufficient number of well qualified teaching staff
- Continued procurement of laboratory equipment;
- Organisation of postgraduate study every year
- Selection of teachers from other Universityes, deparmants, firms
(referenced associates).
Basic weaknesses and problems that limit the Department of
Geology in the realization of the objectives are:
- Unsolved space and personnel problems;
- Lack of quality IT equipment;
- Lack of laboratory equipment;
- Lack of assistants
- Lack of administrative staff and an overload of current employees in the
student and legal services
- Insufficient training of all employees in an equal volume
- Serious delay in the organization of quality doctoral studies;
- Relatively small number of teachers and staff publish scientific papers
in internationally recognized journals;
- Student organizations working in difficult conditions, without precisely
defined space to work, adequate equipment and logistical support.
