Recent development in the electric and electronic fields, e.g. remote control of dam gates and
turbines, has spurred a renewed interest in electricity generation in small rivers. But is it
preferable from other aspects such as the Swedish environmental objectives and the EU water
framework directive. And why are the amateur fishermen so negative to hydropower?
How to reduce the heating costs in a socially responsible way (Lars Hylander)
Due to large heating costs, a homeowners' association (HOA) is Uppsala is planning to
replace their connection to the district heating system with a water-water heat pump. The sales
representative of the heat pump demonstrates the economic advantages, but is this a good
alternative for the society, considering that the district heating plant is fired by "useless"
household waste, while the electricity powering the heat pump is the energy form with highest
quality available, and has a multitude of alternative uses.
Can a solar panel heater be accepted on a cultural heritage building (Lars Hylander)
Old houses are often poorly insulated. Putting modern insulation material is generally not
permitted on protected buildings such as churches, open air museum etc. Are there any other
options to heat up old buildings with less stress on the environment or should the visitors be
asked to bring extra clothes?

The present single railway line passing Gamla Uppsala will be replaced with a double line
railway laid down in a tunnel. But where to put the station. Visitors to Gamla Uppsala burial
mounds want it beside the mounds. Can the Swedish National Heritage Board accept roller
escalators beside the mounds? Is the municipality rather planning for connections to a civil
airport, when they suggest the station to be located several kilometers away?

Motorized cutting equipment and lawn movers are emitting carbon dioxide, labor intense and
noisy. Could other options be used to cut the grass. And get additional values? Or is it maybe
not necessary to cut the grass twice a week?
Could ancient technology reduce the nutrient loss to the Baltic Sea (Lars Hylander)
The Baltic Sea has a record as a highly polluted sea with related problems such as
eutrophication and algae blooms. Agricultural runoff is not the largest but still a significant
source of nutrients to the Baltic Sea. Could Terra Preta, a farming practice invented to prevent
nutrient leakage from Amazonian soils, be a way to reduce the leakage to the Baltic? And at
the same time sequester carbon in the soil for thousands of years.
Could ruralisation be a way to make cities sustainable (Lars Hylander)
When Uppsala expands, most people want to build houses eastwards of the center. However,
there is no proper water and sanitation systems there, so the municipality plans to dig down
pipes for water, sewage and district heating. Is this sustainable, or would it be a better
conservation of resources to build low energy houses with small-scale waste water treatment
and water reuse. Would this be socially accepted? And would the municipality accept to give
up their monopoly on sewage and waste?
