LOS ANGELES SOUTHWEST COLLEGE
NURSING PREREQUISITES
In order to be accepted into the Nursing Program at Los Angeles Southwest College, all prerequisites must be
met at the time of application. US high school equivalency will be verified by the Nursing Department.
EQUIVALENT COURSE CREDIT FOR STUDIES COMPLETED WITHIN THE UNITED STATES:
Coursework taken at another accredited US institution may fulfill a prerequisite or prerequisites. All coursework
must be verified by providing an official transcript and, if possible, a course description (generally found in the
college catalog) from any college outside of the Los Angeles Community College District. The student will be
required to meet with a Counselor to complete an Evaluation of Credit. In some cases, the Counselor will consult
with a Department Chairperson who will make the final determination to accept or deny course equivalency.
EQUIVALENT COURSE CREDIT FOR STUDIES COMPLETED AT A FOREIGN INSTITUTION:
Coursework taken at a foreign institution may fulfill a prerequisite course but only after having the foreign
transcript evaluated. The approved evaluation agencies are those used by the Los Angeles Community College
District Personnel Office* and are:
Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute
Academic and Professional International Evaluations, Inc.
American Education Research Corporation
Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.
Educational Records Evaluation Service
Institute for International Credentials Evaluations at California State University, Fresno
International Education Research Foundation, Inc.; Credentials Evaluation Service
World Education Services; Application for Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials
(*A list, with complete contact information, is available in the Nursing and Counseling Offices.)
Students will be directed to a Counselor who will review the evaluated foreign transcript. The Counselor will
prepare documentation recommending equivalent credit. In some cases the Counselor will consult with a
Department Chairperson who will make the final determination to accept or deny course equivalency.
A District-wide policy is pending on acceptance of coursework taken at foreign universities. The existing
procedure does not allow coursework or subject matter equivalency for fulfillment of English Composition, Oral
Communication, or for American Institutions. In addition course equivalency is not granted by the Nursing
Department for the following Nursing Prerequisites: Psychology 1 and 41.
EVALUATION AND NOTIFICATION:
Students will be notified by mail of their application status.
Please note, while calculations and Prerequisite Checks may be based on student copies of transcripts,
complete sets of original transcripts (one transcript for each school attended, including LA Southwest)
must be on file in the Nursing Department Office and in the Office of Admissions.
