11.12.13 APPENDIX D Survey of Whitman Academic Departments and Programs 1 Anthropology - no regular internship offerings Art - Currently, no mechanism for internships for academic credit Art History & Visual Culture Studies - No information provided from Department Asian Studies - No regular internship offerings Astronomy - No information provided from Department Biology -No Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology- students can continue research conducted on or off campus as part of a summer research internship, and turn that work into their senior thesis. They do not get credit for doing a research internship. They earn credit for the analysis of the work, the writing of the thesis, and then the seminar presentation of the project. Chemistry- Unusual but possible - there have been a very few times with a student completes a summer job that will not count towards senior research credit but we give them course credit Classics - No Dance- No information provided from Department Economics- No information provided from Department English - Department offers no courses linked to internships. When presented with a detailed proposal by a student with whose work they are familiar, individual faculty have agreed, on occasion, to teach an overload independent study on academic work that is linked to an internship.
