CORRIB GAS LAND
USE DISPUTE
INTRODUCTION
 In November, 2000 planning permission was given
for an onshore terminal at Bellanaboy.
 The Corrib gas project is the planned extraction of a
natural gas deposit off Erris Head in Co. Mayo
 The field is located about 80 km off, in water depths
of 355 metres
 The project has attracted considerable opposition.
ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE PROJECT
 The location of the pipeline is a concern.
 Marine ecology could be in danger.
 It will increase noise and pollution.
 Shell pays very little taxes.
 Shell can not be trusted
ARGUMENTS FOR THE PROJECT
 Employment will rise in the area.
 It will provide energy for homes and businesses.
 60% of Ireland’s gas needs could be provided for the
next 20 years.
Our Opinion
 There are more disadvantages then advantages.
 The pipe could explode due to movement of bogland
 Highest gas pressure pipelines in Europe –
THIS IS DANGEROUS!
 Shell have laid 3km of pipeline without permission –
THEY CAN NOT BE TRUSTED!!! `
