Invasive Species Guest Speaker: Mr. Mike Miller Brief Introduction – Bachelors in Environmental Science/Resource Management – Employment • Aquatic Invasive Technician • Restoration Biologist • Conservation Planner/Specialist Invasive Species vs. Non-native Species Invasive Species – As per Executive Order 13112 an "invasive species" is defined as a species that is: 1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and. 2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. Non-native Species – Non-native species do not cause environmental or economic harm. An important, not-to-be-missed distinction between non-native species and invasive species is that non-native species do not disrupt the natural functions and processes of our native ecosystems. Invasion Curve Plants We May See Outside – Autumn Olive – Honey Suckle (multiple species) – Multiflora Rose – Dead nettle – Callery Pear Possibly Many More!!! Expectations for Campus Exploration – The campus is an extension of our classroom. This means that the same rules still apply! – Be respectful of our guest, your teachers, your peers, and yourself. – Do not run or yell or scream. – Leaves of three, let them be! Do not touch plants unless you are instructed to. – We are going OUTSIDE. This means that there will be pollen, insects, dirt, and other things related to the outdoors. You will be OK. – Check yourself for ticks before coming inside. Conservation and Treatment – Department of Forestry (DOF) – Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) – Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) – Local Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCD’s) Treatment is specific & timing is important!!!!
